Nick Jonas TESTIFIES FOR DIABETES Capitol Hill Committee Washington, DC

Nick Jonas testified before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs in Washington, DC about Diabetes research. He wants to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. Thanks Denise!

  • Laurb

Everyone who is saying bad things about him right now, you are terrible people. Diabetes isn’t something that anyone should take lightly it’s a horrible disease. Nick and millions of other peoples lives most likely will be shortened at least ten years. As for nick managing his disease and continuing down his career path must be one of the hardest things in the world. But he dies for himself, his family, and his friends. But most of all he does it for all of us
Nick is a wonderful person and one of my biggest heros

    =====

    no, not everyone does it.
i don’t, and many of my friends don’t.
it’s not hard to memorize a speech, especially if you’re passionate about the topic.
and like i said, you look better when you DON’T rely on note cards and you’re able to ad lib.
all my friends who did use note cards continually got worse grades on their speeches then my friends and i who didn’t use them.

so don’t make generalizations like you know everything.

plus, i doubt that you’re in college — if you are, it’s pretty sad that you used the wrong part of speech. you should of used “you’re” not “your”.

maybe you should take a grammar class instead of a speech class???
    just sayin’.

For those surprised that Nick and Mary Tyler Moore would read from a prepared speech. That is how it is done. Since diabetes is a part of my life, I have watched these hearings before and they do read a prepared statement. It means a lot to people with diabetes that someone would stand up and be an advocate for the rest of us.

Try living your life knowing that you could be blind, have no feet or legs, have a higher chance of heart disease, liver failure, kidney failure, and a long list of other things. And of course if no one is around to help you when your blood sugar goes too low you could die. If you marry and have children will they have it too. Will your spouse have to support you because you are an invalid in a wheelchair. Don’t plan on driving a commercial bus, being an airline pilot, or being in the military, or pursuing a number of other vocations. Being a paramedic is out too. Why? Not because of anything you did. Type 1 diabetes does not have anything to do with weight or exercise, you just draw the wrong genetic card and it’s part of your life forever.

Nick is a positive influence. He works hard to do what he wants to do with his life and shows others that anything is possible. That cure may not be soon enough for him but it will help others.

I thank him for his efforts.

Dear Nicholas Jerry Jonas, you are my hero and inspiration. That speech you said today had me nearly in tears and chills going up my spine. My grandfather has diabetes and I watch him take his blood level all the time, same with my bestfriend! Your words are so powerful, were all so proud.

PS. Miley is proud too! :)

Miley better be proud of her man or BFF
    —————–
Miley is a great girlfriend for supporting him eventhought she knows he has diabetes. i had a boyfriend for years and we loved each other when my boyfriend found out i had health problems he left me because he did not want to be with a sick person. Eventhought i can manage my diabetes he thought i would give him sick children or he did not want to invest the time in case i went into a hospital. Miley must be a great girl she don’t care he sick she supports him and love him for who he is not for what he has. Nick deserves a girl who will be there when things get hard in which it will once in a while i like that she truly loves him and support him unlike my boyfriend. Now am more cautious i don’t want to give my heart to anyone i feel like someone will make me feel horrible the way he made me feel. Now am scare to love again because i feel like damage goods just because i have diabetes.

  • TooLegitToQuit

    really, really good speech.

however, i think it would have been a LOT more powerful if he didn’t read right off the sheet the whole time.

i love that he’s doing this, but speaking from someone who’s taken MANY public speaking classes in preparation to go into communications or public relations, a really effective speech is one spoken from the heart with a lot off pathos.

i wanna know who wrote that speech though, because it was awesome. if he wrote it, MAJOR PROPS to him. and if not, kudos to whoever did write it. i don’t think it was him though just for the simple fact that at times he looked uncomfortable reading it, almost as if he was unfamiliar.

like i said, great speech for a great cause though.
anybody publicly taking actions to cure diabetes (or any disease for that matter) is pretty amazing in my book :]

p.s. i know this has happened before:
no haters talk about how you can’t die from diabetes. diabetes IS technically a terminal illness; my uncle has it, and i have like three friends whose dads are doctors.
it IS a terminal illness and you almost always end up dying from a diabetes related problem if you have it.

so now disrespect towards the disease please :]

  • Anonymous

wow he is such an amazing person

  • jerseygirl

Just an FYI – Mary Tyler Moore also read from her notes. Which I found surprising because, being an actress, I would have thought she could have memorized most of it.

    =====

yeahh, i find that suprising as well!
i don’t think it’s hard to memorize speeches at all.

    notes, i get.
but reading straight off the paper as nick did just is a no-no. hahaha
but maybe he was nervous and felt like he couldn’t pull off trying to go partially from memory :/

    either way, kudos to him.
    ——————————–
It must be pretty intimidating in that environment. Nick did seem nervous but I do think he at least looked up more than MTM did. LOL.

I’ve taken public speaking courses too and it’s definitely points marked off if you read from your notes. But then again, I can’t imagine being a 16 yr.old addressing a bunch of politicians. He MUST have been so nervous. But I agree, I think he did a great job.

  • lisa

i really hope they find a cure. this isn’t really that relative, but my dog had diabetes for about four years. it was so sad. his health just plummeted from it, and we had to put him down. I just wish that they can find a cure so that the same thing that happened to my dog, doesn’t happen to people.

He has a lot of courage to testify in front of the Senate and he was very well spoken. Great job Nick! And thank you for supporting JDRF.

How appropriate for this young man with so much to give and that he hs given at a young age…College,,St or US congress/senate and at 35 he could run for Presidnt..Yes….President Jonas…

In the meantime, he brings attention to diabetes and funding and he walks amongst those who are young now but will be his elder advisors….I hpe for a cure to diabetes…and all other killers of humans from the inside out…I know that under a future Jonas admin that all their travels and cultural admiration that they will take their faith in a direction of respect for all people…

Music helps but peoples money and attention affect cures…they have the music to make you feel good but every dollar goes to secure research and to one day put a guy in charge who will be humble and centered and worldly but knows where he comes from…a Jonai world..one and at Peace…..

    Congressman,……Senator…..President Jonas..sounds good..

Apparently you have never watched a Senate Hearing. All those who testify on the panel, like Nick, have to submit their written testimony. Here is the link to Nick’s…

    http://www.examiner.com/x-8357-DC-TV-Examiner~y2009m6d23-Watch-Nick-Jonas-9-am-Senate-testimony-on-diabetes

They then read their testimony to the Senate Committee. Everyone else did exactly the same thing. I’m sure he had to have been a little nervous in front the the Senate. This is not something that an average 16 year old does in an average day. I thought he was very mature and well spoken.

    Ignorance is never attractive!

He didn’t do this for his career, he wasn’t paid for this. He was asked to testify by the National group and JDRF to help bring attention to the disease. The funding that the government provides for Diabetes is instrumental and has helped lead to great improvements in treatment.

He was there to lobby on behalf of millions that are affected by this disease so that the government continues to fund research.

I love how serious Nick is about finding a cure for diabetes. He’s so passionate about it and I love that! I love the ending when he says “With your help, a little bit longer and we’ll all be fine.” He’s such an inspiration for people his age, younger, and older, it shows that no matter how old you are you can make an impact in the world.

WTF!!!! U SHOULD NEVER WISH FOR SOMEONE 2 DIE!!!!! I DONT CARE IF U DONT LIKE HIM BUT THAT IS RUDE!!!!!

  • brandy

Every one saying that diabetes isn’t a serious disease and they should worry about cancer or aids, you have to see something. Nick is living with diabetes, so its very close to his heart. Diabetes isn’t a small disease, its one of the top ten killer diseases in men and women. My grandmother, my mother, and my sister all have type 1 diabetes. Its not as easy as you think. It physically brings you down almost all the time. For my sister to have a good day her sugar has to be perfect. Having the lows makes her miss school, miss tests, and just in general miss out.

yes its manageable, but its not easy, and should not be taken lightly. Nick is an inspiration to me for getting people to revisit the idea of finding a cure. I might become a diabetic, my children might become diabetics, YOUR children might become diabetics. Its about time we find a cure for it. So many people suffer from it, we just need to let it become more aware. And i commend nick for helping.

Can Nick Jonas die because of his diabetes?
    —-

find it surprising how no one has answered this question yet:

If a diabetic does not take care of themselves at all (which I have done….I have my reasons) they can get VERY sick…and in some cases go into what is called a Diabetic Coma (most people don’t survive from these)

however, there is a bigger risk for heart problems, liver problem, and other medical conditions which diabetics are at a greater risk for.

  • Jasmyne

what is wrong with everyone trying to bring him down?
i bet diabetes is much worse than everyone thinks it is.
just imagine pricking your finger twelve times a day?
    or not having sugary foods?
you guys should appreciate what you have and please stop trying to bring him down just because he is doing what he believes is right.
he is such an inspiration and i cannot believe he is only 16 but us kids could do amazing things too.
you guys that are insulting him need to leave and deserve diabetes than nick.
as they always say, ‘if you have nothing good to say, don’t say it at all’.
yeah, that goes to you guys.
i love nick for doing this.
    this takes dedication.

A cure for diabetes needs to be found, it’s an uneccessary disease that happens to people that did not deserve it, just like the kids in St. Jude with cancer, they did nothing to deserve any of that. I want to see my grandma well, it pains me to see her, giving herself a shot two times a day, and it pains me to know that Nick has to prick his fingers numerous times a day. I hope they find a cure someday. <3

  • TooLegitToQuit

First of all – to all of you pieces of shit saying such horrible things: one word – KARMA.

For the rest of us, I hope this helps to point out what a truly remarkable young man Nick is. He IS sick; and struggles with this disease every.single.day. But, like he said, he refuses to let it slow him down. I think he is a profile in courage and I have such respect for him.

    =========

    exactly.
i don’t get why people would wish that one someone! wait till something bad happens to them or a family member, then they shall be humbled and see how bad it really is :(

but just like nick said, it’s SO hard to manage diabetes.
my uncle has it bad, and in the past month has been to the hospital TWICE because his blood sugar was in the 700’s.

there are so many things more than just low or high blood sugar.
i have hypoglycemia (miley fans should know what this is; it’s chronic low blood sugar) and that’s hard enough to manage!
i can’t even imagine trying to manage both low AND high blood sugars!

plusss, there’s so many things that come with it: always being cold, loss of limbs, and some other, very unfortunate (and somewhat awkward) things that i really don’t care to mention.

    but really, diabetes is serious.
good for nick for speaking up about it!

  • kimmy4

Good morning. My name is Nick Jonas, and I’d like to thank you for having me here today. I’d like to share my story of living with type 1 diabetes, and talk about the need to fund research to find a cure.

First, I would like to thank you, Senator Collins, for chairing this hearing and for being such a champion for all of us with diabetes. Everyone here today for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Children’s Congress is grateful for your leadership on the Senate Diabetes Caucus and your commitment to people with type 1 diabetes. We are lucky to have you pushing for policies that will bring us closer to a cure.

In one way, or another I have spent most of my life performing. I’ve been writing songs since I can remember, and I love sharing my passion for music. As a little kid, I sang in the choir in my dad’s church, and then performed on Broadway. As the Jonas Brothers, my brothers Joe, Kevin and I have written songs, made albums and toured the country, playing our music for people all over America.

It was during a concert tour in 2005 that I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. My brothers were the first to notice that I had lost a lot of weight – fifteen pounds in two weeks. I was thirsty all the time and had a bad attitude, which isn’t like me at all because I’m a really positive person. It would have been easy to blame my symptoms on a hectic schedule. But my family knew I had to get to a doctor.

The normal range for blood sugar is between 70 and 120. When we got to the doctor’s office, we learned that my blood sugar was over 700. The doctor said I had type 1 diabetes, but I had no idea what that meant. The first thing I asked her was, “Am I going to die?” She assured me that I wasn’t going to die, but that I’d have to manage this disease for the rest of my life. We went right to the hospital where I spent three days, including a crash course in getting my blood glucose levels in control and living with diabetes.

It hasn’t been easy, but diabetes technology has really helped me to manage my diabetes. At first, I took insulin shots, but it was just too hard on the road to give myself shots. I switched to a pump, which has been great. Since then, my average blood glucose levels have come down, and I’m able to use the pump to better estimate how much insulin I need based on the carbs I eat. I am also considering a continuous glucose monitor, but for now, I still prick my finger to check my blood sugar. I do that up to 12 times a day, including right before I began this testimony.

While technology has made it much easier for me to manage my diabetes, technology is not a cure. Insulin is not a cure. Like everyone here today, I know that the promise of a cure lies only in research. I am grateful that Congress renewed the Special Diabetes Program last year, which has helped researchers make important discoveries into what causes type 1 diabetes. This vital program has also funded research to test new drugs and therapies that could treat or cure patients with type 1 diabetes, and may even lead to an artificial pancreas one day. I ask that each of you join me in supporting the renewal of the Special Diabetes Program next year so that the researchers can continue their work on a cure for our disease. My life depends on it. All our lives depend on it.

After I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, I wrote a song called A Little Bit Longer about dealing with diabetes. I’d like to submit a copy of the full song for the record, but I’d like to read one of the verses, which explains my outlook on life with diabetes:

    All this time goes by
    Still no reason why
    A little bit longer
    And I’ll be fine
    Waitin’ on a cure
But none of them are sure
    A little bit longer
    And I’ll be fine

Diabetes has changed my life. But I know that I’ve benefited from the government’s investment in diabetes research. With the help of Congress, I’ll only have to wait a little bit longer for a cure.

In the meantime, I’ve decided not to let diabetes slow me down. In just the last two months, my brothers and I launched a new TV show, released our third album and began a world concert tour. My approach to managing diabetes is to focus on simple wins — little things I can do each day to achieve my goals. Over time, these everyday victories can make a big difference in your life — just like every research advancement moves us along on our path to a cure. While on that path, I want to be a positive face for diabetes. I want to show kids with type 1 diabetes – like all the kids sitting with me today – that they can live with diabetes and still make their dreams come true.

Thank you for the opportunity to appear before you today, and thank you for your commitment to diabetes research. With your help, a little bit longer and we will all be fine.

  • HonorThat

These are the types of things that should be honored on a regular basis. Nick and other teens do ALOT to help make the lives of others better. I applaude you Nick. Well done.
