Black Keys is one very brilliantly written song, in part because of the use of the metaphor, the 'black keys'.
The song is about a girl that the writer (Nick) had dated, been friends with, etc. that he only saw one side of. The side he saw was this 'perfect rainbow' he speaks of.
The 'black keys' metaphor comes in when she leaves, and he begins to learn these things about her. He learns the sharps and flats about her, (i.e. the sun proves that the world doesn't revolve around someone, and the sky lets her keep her pride). If you play piano, or even if you don't, (I did until I turned 3), you'd probably know that the black keys are the sharps and flats.
So it basically means that what he saw were the white keys, the beautiful rainbow about the girl, but he never saw the black keys. And now he's saying that he thinks the black keys are probably the most beautiful thing about her.
Now, this last part is a stretch, but I believe that it may be the meaning. The first part, 'the colors fade to gray' once she's gone, means that she was kind of like the color in his life. Now that she's gone, however, thats when Nick starts noticing the black keys.
That ties in with the last part, 'sometimes a fight is better black and white'. He realizes that it was better if he hadn't seen her as a perfect rainbow. If he'd seen those black keys, maybe the fights would've been easier, and maybe she wouldn't have left.

for me personally, liking miley isn't about her talent (even though i do think she is talented) i became a fan after her vanity fair scandal. i saw how unfairly people were judging her and i realized someone who can withstand that must be pretty awesome. i watched interviews and stuff with her and... idk... she just has this great personality. everyone she meets just seems to fall in love with her, that's gotta say something about her.

Honestly, and i hope this doesn't offend anyone, But i really doubt Nick wrote any songs for Selena. I mean in 2008, when he should have been writing about Selena, he wrote about Miley (Can't have you, Sorry, Burning up, Lovebug (idk if that counts though. That song was written on the BOBW tour) Got me going crazy (again idk if that counts. It was supposed to be on the first album.) and then on the LVATT they already broke up so... Andf he wrote songs about Miley there too.
If you read her Girl's Life interview from this month, I'm pretty sure "black keys" is about Selena. She said a bf gave her the name beautifully disturbed cuz she's always so negative and that she needs to find the ebauty in being positive. Sounds a lot like the black keys lyrics.

Well at least shes back with him now. If they weren't that would be so sad.. Miley was always hugging Nick on the BOBW tour & in pics when Nick went to hug Miley in TX she looked surprised & it was so sweet! I stopped it & the look on Nicks face was pure bliss! True but ALBL was still kinda in the process of writing when Nick starting dating Selena. And if he did write songs about her during the time they were dating he could have put it on LVATT.
Even if they weren't together. Nick wrote "Got Me Going Crazy" about Miley,orginally for the "Jonas Brothers" album but they couldn't fit it on so he put it on ALBL. When Nick and Miley were already broken up. So he could have easilu fit any songs about Selena on LVATT.

As she thanks God she points up & teary eyed & with cracked voice, Miley says,, I want thank God for opening a window after the door had closed. As she is saying that she glances over to Nick...She has tears in her big pretty eyes, the crowd is quiet, you could hear a pin drop with a few people saying awwww.. Black Keys is one very brilliantly written song, in part because of the use of the metaphor, the 'black keys'.
The song is about a girl that the writer (Nick) had dated, been friends with, etc. that he only saw one side of. The side he saw was this 'perfect rainbow' he speaks of.
The 'black keys' metaphor comes in when she leaves, and he begins to learn these things about her. He learns the sharps and flats about her, (i.e. the sun proves that the world doesn't revolve around someone, and the sky lets her keep her pride). If you play piano, or even if you don't, (I did until I turned 3), you'd probably know that the black keys are the sharps and flats.
So it basically means that what he saw were the white keys, the beautiful rainbow about the girl, but he never saw the black keys. And now he's saying that he thinks the black keys are probably the most beautiful thing about her.
Now, this last part is a stretch, but I believe that it may be the meaning. The first part, 'the colors fade to gray' once she's gone, means that she was kind of like the color in his life. Now that she's gone, however, thats when Nick starts noticing the black keys.
That ties in with the last part, 'sometimes a fight is better black and white'. He realizes that it was better if he hadn't seen her as a perfect rainbow. If he'd seen those black keys, maybe the fights would've been easier, and maybe she wouldn't have left.
