Micro-blogging service Twitter was taken offline in what the company believes was a co-ordinated attack.

The popular site has been subject to a so-called denial-of-service attack, according to the firm's official blog.

Denial-of-service attacks take various forms but often involve a company's servers being flooded with data in an effort to disable them.

The outage began Thursday morning but the geographic scale of the attack is still not known.

"On this otherwise happy Thursday morning, Twitter is the target of a denial of service attack," said company co-founder Biz Stone on the company's blog.

"Attacks such as this are malicious efforts orchestrated to disrupt and make unavailable services such as online banks, credit card payment gateways, and in this case, Twitter for intended customers or users."

The service was restored shortly after the blog post, but the company's status page suggests that the site is "continuing to defend against and recover from this attack".

A ComScore study suggests the site had around 45 million users worldwide as of June 2009.

However, as many users interact with the service through mobile phones or third-party software, the actual number of users is likely to be higher.

It looks great on Miley, but you have to see that the lighting of a picture and just the poses and scenery in a picture can make a huge difference as to how they both look. It doesn't look awful on Hilary, though; It just doesn't seem like the right time of day for her to be wearing it, so it looks a wee bit off, ya know?

I like them both, but I'm going with Miley. Hilary's not fat or anything, but the dress made her look awkward. Miley's got a smaller frame which just fits the dress better. Also, Hilary's boobs are too big for it. It makes her look weird in it. Not to mention how much paler she is, the colors of the dress just washed out Hilary's complexion where Miley who had a tan worked it. And on one more side note, Miley's shoes and earrings were better. Hilary had on the shiny shoes and large, dangling earrings which is just too much on an already busy dress. Miley's accessories are simple which work perfectly with a dress that already has so much going on.

I think that miley wore it better because I think her hair color looked better with the outfit, Hilary`s hair blended too much.

I think they both look so amazing, but I think Hilary won by a bit. The dress looks better with hair down, with hair up and no necklace on it makes Miley's neck look longer. Both look awesome still, though
