Debby Ryan Myspace blog: Have you ever met someone who wanted so badly to be like someone else? If it’s not organic to them, it doesn’t work. Maybe you’ve seen someone who tries really hard to be different. They don’t listen to who they actually are; they just want to be different.
Conforming to nonconformity is equal conformity; don’t mess with any of it. Music is the same way. Artists that TRY to be mainstream are called ‘rip-offs’. Artists that TRY super hard to be different are ‘posers’. No matter how eccentric or nonsensical or mainstream a piece of music is, there’s always going to be someone who likes it and someone who hates it.
All we can do is genuinely create an audible manifestation of our souls. Know yourself, know the music in your soul and then put it together out loud, lyrics, instruments, tempo, in the combination that feels like it matches it most honestly. That’s my definition of good music.
