UPDATE: Chronicle reviewed Selena and Justin’s performance. Bieber is an engaging vocalist, and at just 16, he’ll undoubtedly improve with age. It will be interesting to see if so many screaming fans stick around for the ride.
Gomez’s 30-minute opening set was a nice surprise, and several songs were accented with a ’60s gogo groove. She looked impossibly cute in a short, sparkly black dress and boots. She worked the stage like a much older, more experienced performer and played to every side of the immense venue.
Selena said: ‘I’m from Texas, and my family named me after a Tejano singer. She performed here. It was one of her last concerts. She was such an inspiration.’ The band kicked into the joyous cumbia strains of Bid Bidi Bom Bom, and Gomez handled the song with grace and ease.
