I think his main problem is that he doesn't want people to focus on just his relationship if he says he's dating someone. He only wants it to be about the music. But I guess it doesn't really matter since people are going to focus on his relationship and personal life anyways.

Well Nick cares. It's probably not easy for him to see his girlfriend who never got hate before suddenly get an overwhelming amount of it. I get where you're coming from though. It just seems like Nick wants to protect her in some way so this is his way.
