Joe Jonas Fastlife Rolling Stone Review

Joe Jonas Fastlife has earned 2 out of 5 stars from Rolling Stone: Like Justin Timberlake before him, Joe Jonas is trying to graduate from world-beating teen-pop megagroup to full-grown solo artist. How exactly is Jonas doing it? By trying to be Justin Timberlake. On Fastlife, he chucks the power pop he played with his bros for ‘sexy’ blue-eyed soul,

..complete with slinky production and lyrics like ‘I know what we’re drinking/ Let me put your night in drive.’ As vocalist & a presence, Jonas is a flop. He sounds strained, simpering, like one of those High School Musical Disney kids trying to sing R&B. Joe will also be performing with Demi at JINGLE BALL!

  • Justinsuglyglasses

According to HDD, he sold less than 8000 CDs this week. We don’t know how much less than 8000, but he is out of the Top 50. http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/sales/salescht.cgi

The album is not a masterpiece but this is ridiculous. No way that Cody fucking Simpson should be outselling Joe. At least Joe is still doing a lot better than Greyson Chance, if that means anything. Pretty sure Greyson is getting another album so all may not be lost for Joe. If Joe does another album, he’s got to give up this dance crap.

  • BecauseICan

Don’t be upset, Rolling Stone critics are professionals and professionally critical. They’re twenty or thirty somethings, so obviously they won’t be as fangirly as people on here.
At least they gave Mumford & Sons, Ellie Goulding and Arcade Fire a good review.

  • shanghai123

Harsh words but unfortunately a lot of truths there. The guy can sing and he has talent but it did not show through in this album. Maybe he should be himself a bit more and not try so hard to be the sexy bad boy which clearly ex fans and new fans alike are not buying.

I completely agree. It just comes across as corny.

I agree completely. And musically-it just isn’t that good-look at who my icon is-I adore Joe, but this album is an embarrassment. He worked this long on it, and this is the crap he gives us? He has 2.7 million twitter followers and only sold 19k albums the first week? Obviously, not many of us were impressed. I’m sure it will do really well in Europe & Latin America, tho, where the Jonas Brothers are still popular. But that still doesn’t mean it’s a good record.

he sucks but not as much as miley

  • Justinsuglyglasses

He should have recorded the upbeat pop songs that David Archuleta had on The Other Side of Down. Those songs would have showcased his vocals more and the subject matter of the songs would not have alienated his younger core audience. With the promo he got, he could have made those songs a hit.

I also think he would be more credible singing songs written by David than by Chris Brown. Who I Am or Stomping the Roses off David’s album would have been PERFECT for Joe. Just listen:

    Who I Am: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4iGwj1qHv0&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL

    Stomping the Roses: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ia1l0Ex6VNo

Whether he wants to admit it or not, at his core, Joe has a lot more in common with David than Chris Brown. Hopefully his management and label will realize this and choose more appropriate songs for him the next time around.

This is a clearly biased and prejudiced review. If they didn’t like the album, that’s fine. They don’t have to. But to throw in those insults is petty and immature. I realize a lot of people can’t handle him growing up. And I think that if we’re honest, we don’t agree with critics on most of the music we all have. It’s called being able to think for yourself.

    I’m not suprised.
His albums pretty much a flop.
He’s trying to hard and failing.

  • NeleeeV

Dear Ocean Up… why you post only Joe’s review from ROlling Stone here… You never did with Demi’s, even though she got the same amount of stars and a bad review as well. ( saying her music needs to grow up)

    So yeah.. just saying.

  • exoticmist

Joe Jonas shouldn’t even fucking be mentioned in the same sentence as JT. So insulting tbh.

Mte. Justin Timberlake is amazing. <3

  • xhaleylynn

Rolling stone has never liked Joe, in their feature article they pretty much said he did absolutely nothing but sit there and play tambourine….

But I found him sexy before he tried to have a sexy imagine….. now it’s just not cute.

  • thefuturemrsnickjonas

lol uh, yes they do hun, yes they do. especially Joe. I’m sure this crushed him.

so let me hear more about this China girl everyone is mentioning. I don’t watch Disney Channel anymore, mainly because my university doesn’t offer it on our cable station, so I know nothing about her. I saw her at Demi’s concert in New York and said hi to her when I heard one of the security guards say her name (otherwise I wouldn’t have known who she was), and she looked so shocked that someone “recognized” her. she literally stopped and did a double-take at me, and then smiled and said hi back.

well people are stupid if they actually care about this magazine. all rolling stone does is trash people and make stupud childish comments that arent needed.

The first HSM movie came out in 2006 and made the cast teen superstars. Ashley, Vanessa and Corbin all released very successful first albums. I agree that Hannah Montana the tv show was popular but Miley the popstar took off after her Best of Both Worlds and Breakout CDs in 2008. JoBros height was 2008 with A Little Bit longer and Camp Rock 2. Ashley, Vanessa and Corbin all released CDs in 2008 and 2009 and none of them were as successful as their first. So yeah, I think Miley and the JoBros took the teen idol crown from the HSM cast in 2008 in the same way that Selena and Justin are taking it from them in 2011. Real question is who will take it from Selena and Zjustin in 2012.

My Money’s on China Mcclain and Bridgit Mendler. They’re few of the disney kids who can actually do it all. But they’re so underrated.

  • Justinsuglyglasses

I agree. Both have “it”, especially China. If Debby Ryan and David Henrie were a bit younger, I think they would have a good chance too. I know they can’t sing but that’s what they said about Selena.

in my opinion once miley releases her two movies selena won’t get as much attention anymore.. she has only gotten attention this year because of dating justin and because the only things miley did this year career wise was snl, and go on tour.

  • purplekoolaid

i agree with this review. i love joe like no other and have been a fan of the jonas brothers for many moons now but this album is garbage. its not that the songs are that bad…its just that joe sounds bad singing him. hes trying WAAAAY to hard to be “grown & sexy” instead of just being natural. the whole album sounds phony and forced. his voice isnt suited well for this type of music.

    THIS!

  • OU Is Dead

NXT, JOE’S ALBUM SUCKS, WHAT ELSE IS NEW?
The Jonas Brothers put this on themselves. They wanted to mess around and not release anything but a soundtrack to their show for 2 years while Bieber was working his lil girly ass off and look what happened. SRY you don’t know how fame works…

    fuck off rolling stone…..

well then I guess I’m stupid, because Rolling Stone is very well admired and experienced in music critics. just because an artist you like got a bad review doesn’t make them “stupid” and “childish.” if you learn to accept criticism that will only help better yourself, you’ll only do that much better.

  • Justinsuglyglasses

Just noticed that the Rolling Stone review took a swipe at the High School Musical cast. Remember the good old days when Ashley, Vanessa and Corbin were big popstars and there was nothing hotter than HSM? I really think the JoBros and Miley took all the HSM fans.

Right their fucking idiots. Their just mad no one buys their magazines any more and their creditability has gone down. I have always been a Nick fan not so much Joe but I do think 2 stars was really low. I bought a couple songs off of Itunes and he is surprisingly good. On this review they just sound bitter. Trying to be like Justin timberlake? Smh

Hannah Montana was big before HSM. And the Jonas didn’t even start to blow up until after the Best of Both Worlds Tour.

  • neelie

Rolling Stone has never liked the Jonas Brothers. They just liked using them on the cover to sell magazines. Such a snooty review.

  • anonmus

Hate the words irrelevant and flop. Just those words alone have no originality. Everyone seems to be using them lately. So easy to write someone off in the music world. They’re done. They’re over. People have no idea whether someone is “done” or “over”. For every famous artist there are albums that don’t do very well. Or they experiment with a sound they like and it doesn’t work out. I’ve heard Joe in person and he has a really good voice. Will agree that their producers have let them record songs in which their voices sound strained. If your voice sounds strained, do not record that song. Move onto something that shows off your voice.

  • NeleeeV

ROllingstone you suck. Not everyone can be the same and Joe did amazing!

  • askashley

LOL! Jonas fans have to always find some way to slam Demi as the reason of Joe’s album flopping even harder than Nick’s second solo album. I also LOL at the fact that they were always the one’s saying how Demi’s only famous cause of the Jo Bros, and now she’s bigger than they are. Just Desserts Much?

  • Viktoreyah

    LOL.

  • UKnowULuvMe

I don’t get the purpose of music critics anyway. It’s not like I ever liked a song because some jerk off in a magazine said it was good. I have friends for that.

  • askashley

and PS, I really wish the music critics would stop comparing every male heart throb to JT. Just because some tweeny booper blows up over night, doesn’t mean he’ll be the next one to win over six grammy’s , 4 Emmy’s , and sell over 18 Million Records World Wide! JT is a MUSIC ICON and one of the few naturally talented heartthrobs we have left in this music industry and he isn’t some butterface that is famous off of his looks like that minor Alex Russo is tapping!
