Just because they fell out of touch and drifted a part doesn't mean that they weren't there for each other. I'm sure they had some sort of falling out - who doesn't fight with their best friend once and a while? Demi was obviously going through a lot and hanging with a new crowd and maybe Selena felt like she wasn't a part of that or didn't like it. Same goes for Demi when Selena started hanging out with Taylor a lot. But I'm sure once Demi entered treatment Selena reached out to her... AKA she was clearly a true friend.
