I'm not saying this as a hater, they still have a lot of fans, including myself, but i don't see them being as big as they were before or getting a lot of albums sold.

Not true. Rock and country sell really well too. Yes, pop sells better but just because it sells better doesn't mean it's the type of music you should do. Artists should do the music THEY enjoy and Joe has always been into rock/indie more than anything. That should've been the route he went down and if he did, I would've taken a listen.
