I think they should try to embrace as much as the series canon as possible. If they're good, they should time it right when the Doctor regenerate in the TV Show that way there's not two Doctor at the same time. In a way it show be like the ep "Rose" where we meet Rose first and then meet the Doctor through her eyes, that way it's still connect to the show by you don't need to know everything to jump in.
