Selena Gomez said: ‘I was never the popular kid at school. I had two friends, but I just sat at the back of the room and got on with my work. School is such an awkward time in your life. I was never confident in school.’ Her cousin being the captain of the cheerleading team at school was the reason she wasn’t bullied:
‘Nobody picked on me because my cousin was one of the popular gang. She was always very protective of me, so I guess I was very lucky. I never went out with guys at school. I had a crush on a guy, but I never told him about it. I did the thing that a lot of girls do: I avoided him!
You need that self confidence if you want to chat to the guy you like. If you’re confident with yourself, & you’re okay with that, then you should go for it. There’s a lot of rejection in this industry and it’s tough. There are also a lot of obstacles that you have to go through and it can be really exhausting.
But if you love it, then that’s all that matters. You have got to go for it. I still have people trying to bring me down, but I’m happy because I love what I do. Ignore the cruel jibes and stick with the nice people.’

What do you think of the upcoming finale episode, Who Will Be The Family Wizard? I was very surprised at the ending, but I liked the fact that I was surprised. They didn’t tell me anything about who was going to become the family wizard until the final day of shooting, so it was completely unexpected, but I think our fans will be very happy with the result. It’s really cool.
A lot of youngsters want to follow in your footsteps and become actors and singers. What advice would you give them? The only advice I ever tell people is simple: you have to be passionate about this industry if you want to make it. It’s not worth it if you don’t really love performing because there are a lot of people who will try to bring you down.
How do people bring you down? There’s a lot of rejection in this industry and it’s tough. There are also a lot of obstacles that you have to go through and it can be really exhausting. But if you love it, then that’s all that matters. You’ve got to go for it. I still have people trying to bring me down, but I’m happy because I love what I do. Ignore the cruel jibes and stick with the nice people.
How do you stay so positive? I’m lucky because I have a lot of support from my family and friends. Rejection doesn’t feel good and sometimes you want to lash out and be in a bad mood, but it’s not worth it. I have so many amazing things in my life. I have a healthy, loving family and I have amazing fans. That’s all that matters to me. I try my best to not dwell on the bad stuff. Focus on the positive.
What do you prefer: working on TV or movies? I don’t know if I can choose between the two because they are very different. Working on Wizards Of Waverly Place has been an amazing experience and I will always remember the fun times we had shooting in front of a live studio audience. We’d perform every week and I really enjoyed it. It became easy and I was very comfortable with the show, but it’s completely different when you work on a movie.
Why is it different to work on a movie? For starters, there’s no live audience. The hours are much longer, so it can be tiring, but you get the opportunity to work in beautiful locations and meet awesome people. Both are a lot of fun.
Do you feel a lot of pressure in the spotlight? There is a lot of pressure, but everyone faces pressure in their life. There are other people my age trying to deal with college and figuring out who they are. Others face pressure to buy their own house, which is also stressful. I just face a different type of pressure.
Do you struggle to keep your private life private? I feel like I give a lot of myself to my fans, but I also keep a lot of things to myself. There are certain parts of my life that should be just for me and nobody else. Do you avoid reading gossip in magazines and on the internet?
I try to avoid gossip, but it’s obviously unavoidable. Gossip is everywhere. There are moments where I read things that hurt my feelings, but not most of the time, I don’t surround my life with magazines or internet. Do you get annoyed by the paparazzi? Yes, I do. I’m not going to deny it!
