Teen Girl Petitions Seventeen Airbrushing

Julia Bluhm, 14, is an eighth grader from Waterville, Maine. Sign her petition HERE: Girls want to be accepted, appreciated, and liked. And when they don’t fit the criteria, some girls try to ‘fix’ themselves. This can lead to eating disorders, dieting, depression, and low self esteem. I’m in a ballet class with a bunch of high-school girls.

On a daily basis I hear comments like: ‘It’s a fat day,’ and ‘I ate well today, but I still feel fat.’ Ballet dancers do get a lot of flack about their bodies, but it’s not just ballet dancers who feel the pressure to be ‘pretty’. It’s everyone. To girls today, the word ‘pretty’ means skinny and blemish-free. Why is that, when so few girls actually fit into such a narrow category? It’s because the media tells us that ‘pretty’ girls are impossibly thin with perfect skin.

Here’s what lots of girls don’t know. Those ‘pretty women’ that we see in magazines are fake. They’re often photoshopped, air-brushed, edited to look thinner, and to appear like they have perfect skin. A girl you see in a magazine probably looks a lot different in real life.

As part of SPARK Movement, a girl-fueled, national activist movement, I’ve been fighting to stop magazines, toy companies, and other big businesses from creating products, photo spreads and ads that hurt girls’ and break our self-esteem. With SPARK, I’ve learned that we have the power to fight back.

That’s why I’m asking Seventeen Magazine to commit to printing one unaltered, real, photo spread per month. I want to see regular girls that look like me in a magazine that’s supposed to be for me. For the sake of all the struggling girls all over America, who read Seventeen and think these fake images are what they should be, I’m stepping up.

I know how hurtful these photoshopped images can be. I’m a teenage girl, and I don’t like what I see. None of us do. Will you join us by signing this petition and asking Seventeen to take a stand as well and commit to one unaltered photo spread a month?

i read “we as girls”/ “me as a girl” a lot on here… but i think what most don’t realize is that this affects guys too (and this is coming from a girl). many boys are very insecure about their body because they might not be those 6 pack, flawless skin cover boys. overweight, really thin guys, or boys with acne are just as insecure as girls. they have to be sensitive but not wimpy at the same time… should be manly and have a good sense of fashion without looking gay. that’s a hard ideal to fit too isn’t it?
    ——-
This is true and the images that the media portrays of guys shouldn’t be ignore but girls are pressure in a much higher degree especially since we live in a patriarchal society

i see where you’re coming from but it’s kinda our own fault, we don’t have to buy those magazines with size zero models on the covers but i do think that people should try to build up teenagers self esteem in schools or familys so that stuff like this doesn’t get to them all that easily…

I agree that it’s our mind the one we need ot change, but not all girls are smart enough to take a step behind and see the whole picture. people just want to belong… I think what Julia is doing is great, we need to start somewhere…

Magazines are just one small part of the issue though, a person can spent there whole life never buying a magazine and they’ll still be surround by the pressure the media puts on us. You are forgetting how influential the media is and how we are condition from a very young age to believe then when they say we should look at certain way.

It has nothing to do with how smart you are it how mch self condense you have even the confident smart people can feel pressure from time to time. We’re not the problem, the media is

Couldn’t agree more to the comment above me , ocean up stop being so stupid Miley is gorgeous !!

  • SubwayToVenus

It’s not always magazines faults, it’s how we are raised nd our own personality, some girls are considered ugly when it comes to society’s point of view, and they don’t give a fuck, and their attitude makes them pretty and maybe they are even more liked than a pretty girl with low self confidence.

  • Anonymous

As a 16 y/o American girl, I’m not on board with this. We like to blame te media for all of our self-esteem issues and no, they do not help the problem but it is not a magazine’s job to raise a confident girl, nor the media. That is where parents come into play. All the people in the media make alot of us want to strive. There has to be that class that is higher up, the more fortunate, the ones we look up to. Doesn’t mean we have to make ourselves clones of them. Maybe it’s because I’m an actress and have a fascination with the entertainment industry, but asking a magazine to stop airbrushing is down right dumb. Part of that industry is the appeal they must put off to seem glamourous and untouchable. And I don’t think there is anything wrong with that.

But why does it have to be like that? It doesn’t. The entertainment industry is supposed to be about just that, entertaining. Not looks and glamor. Their job is supposed to be about being good at what they do whether it be singing, acting, dancing, playing instruments, etc. That is why you get these good looking people who have no talent whatsoever into the industry and they start trying to act or sing.

You’re talking about the music industry, the FASHION industry is supposed to be glamourous, if you don’t like it, then don’t take it, no one’s shoving a magazine up to your ass. It’s not the media the one’s who’s encharged of raising kids, of course there’s a misconception of what beauty is, but even if magazines started selling girls with greasy hair and a crooked nose, society will still judge, cause people are judgamental and that’s when each person has to learn to be above all of that.

Clearly there are people here that are OK with the world remaining vain.

Yep, I wouldn’t wanna date a greasy woman, I want classy. Get over the fact that the world doesn’t want obese people on a magazine cover. We want healthy and clearly the people on magazine covers are healthy and confident with themselves.

It’s not the media’s fault I’m so insecure, especially since I’m skinny and a lot of celebs are starting to promote curves now. It’s my fault for letting them get to me and affect how I see myself. You can be the ugliest person in the world but if you have a personality and present yourself well, people will like you. Looks do matter but if you’re a total bitch, then what’s the point?

    I DONT UNDERSTAND-
why American’s cant just accept people for who the fuck they are. they treat over weight people like they’re some sort of different species. sure its not healthy to be 100 pounds over weight but the fact that people emphasize it only makes it worse. being in highschool and being over weight really fucking sucks. i workout every day and i work my ass off to have get the body i have now. but i wouldnt be doing that if being skinny wasn’t so “cool” or “attractive”. society is fucked up and that’s what it comes down to. kids are no longer thinking about the personality of their peers, but rather what they look like physically… and its pretty fuckkeddd up.

That’s not true. If you lose weight because it’s “in” and the cool thing to do, that’s a personal problem.

People are easily influenced and tend to believe everything they hear. We’re also very judgmental. If magazines were to put bigger girls on the cover, I guarantee you someone will say “they could of at least gotten a PRETTY big girl”.

Well i disagree. when girls are pressured by society to look a certain way they start to feel insecure, ANY teenage girl has dealt with that. its the pressure of society, you honestly can’t escape it. im a strong person yet i still feel pressured to look a certain way. what im making a point about is society mind fucks people into thinking that way.

Whilst I agree that there should be LESS photoshopping and that magazine should not use the very young and very skinny models (Vogue has just announced worldwide that they will not) I dont think in reality people would want to buy those magazines. Its quite ridiculous though when they airbrush an already beautiful model or actress to the point where the actress looks 10 years younger and is unrecogniseable!! BUT have no problem with them just touching up minor things to present an attractive article or cover. There have recently been some articles or covers of magazine not photoshopped or the people not wearing makeup and honestly you take one look at that cover and say bring back the photoshopping!!!!!

where are you people seeing these “perfect” models. models are often traditionally unattractive. im not talking about supermodels like heidi klum, i’m talking high fashion runway/print models. most are super skinny (which believe it or not men actually find UNATTRACTIVE), and have weird, yet distinctive features. models are chosen for a striking look not because they are “pretty”

and also as a budding fashion designer i understand why models are skinny. skinny people look alright in anything. you dont have to tailor clothes to allow for their booms or butt or cinched waist. you just throw it on them and go! in a high-paced fashion show thats what you need.

now i agree all this airbrushing and stuff is over-the-top and ridiculous and does negatively influence our children. but we need to realize that as consumers WE HAVE THE POWER. if you dont like the way a brand advertises, jsut dont buy from that brand. eventually they’ll get it an change their tactics. their are companies that promote normal looking body types (dove comes to mine as the #1). losing $$$ is the only way they;re gonna get it, not any amount of protesting and complaining

I don’t diet!! I play football (soccer) and I train a lot but I eat like a motherfucker, however, I suffer from hypoglucemia and that makes me lose a lot of weight and I can’t help it.

Clearly these revolting pics of Selena Gomez naked are a blatant attack on Islam. If Selena thinks that she can terrorize us pious Muslims with her sinful nude body like this, and that we will not respond she is sorely mistaken. Prepare for the wrath of the Jihad Ms Gomez! Allahu Akbar!

The fact that Selena Gomez has now taken to slutting herself on the move is a disturbing trend. This type of mechanized moral degradation could not only spread sin quickly, but makes whores like Selena difficult targets to hit with stones. Thank Allah civilized Muslim countries had the foresight to ban women from driving any vehicle save for a plow.

Except when you consider how influential the media is. As girls, we’re bombard with images of how we should be, what we should think, and how we should act. Sure, it’s great if every female in the world suddenly stood up and realize how false these images are but do you know how hard it is when society keeps telling you your self worth is directly proportion to your waistline? We should be calling those girls weak, we should be focusing on the real problem which is the media. Everyone who says the media doesn’t have any control over their life is lying or lives in a cave.

I completely agree with Julia. We as girls are bombarded with these ridiculous notions of how girls should be from the time we are young enough to understand the things we see around us. Even when Seventeen had their Pretty Amazing contest, the girl who won was flawless on the cover. Our perception of beauty is completely distorted because of the messages magazines like Seventeen give. In their issues are remedy after remedy of ways to “fix” ourselves, by doing this workout and eating this and buying this and shopping here and going there. It’s an endless cycle and all it does is constantly make girls feel like we’re just not good enough. I wish Julia the best of luck with her campaign!

RME at the attitude on this post. Sure some of you are fine with how you look and are proud of it, good for you but not everyone thinks and feels the same way as you. It’s incredible hard for people to think differently when they’ve been pressure all their life to look a certain way. The problem is much deeper then someone just not having enough confidence in themselves.

i read “we as girls”/ “me as a girl” a lot on here… but i think what most don’t realize is that this affects guys too (and this is coming from a girl). many boys are very insecure about their body because they might not be those 6 pack, flawless skin cover boys. overweight, really thin guys, or boys with acne are just as insecure as girls. they have to be sensitive but not wimpy at the same time… should be manly and have a good sense of fashion without looking gay. that’s a hard ideal to fit too isn’t it?

  • Anonymous

I’m sorry I don’t agree at all. High fashion is a line of art. It has been this way for years. If you want to look hot- eat correctly, keep good hygiene and exercise. Super models really are that thin. I’m a model/singer/dancer/actress and I work hard to have a great physical appearance and I’m never starving or eating garbage food. Pimples aren’t pretty- they’re a reality we all get them… Eventually we grow out of them. I was formerly a ballerina an studied with ABT until I was 17- being thin is important. In the performance industry you are basically selling yourself do you should look great (you are the product) there are people of all types in this business.

OMG, it’s pathetic how some OU users are connected to this Demi shit.

We’re not connected, we were talking about drama, myspace and I remembered about those old demi comments from 2007 because I was a fan by then and she posted the link, no big deal, it’s on google.

  • Anonymous

Don’t get me wrong but … skinny girls are prettier than fat girls that’s how the world works i’m not being mean but that’s the truth so why do we have to hide it ? why do we have to be like ” media makes skinny girls looks pretty and shit ” NO they ARE actually pretty , they are blessed with such body we’re not … so plz stop with all this crap , it’ just a lie that we keep spreading !!!

  • Anonymous

oh you mean the blog? or the myspace comments? cuz the myspace comments are real and you can check demi’s myspace to see them. they’re still there… lol

  • meow

Yep, I wouldn’t wanna date a greasy woman, I want classy. Get over the fact that the world doesn’t want obese people on a magazine cover. We want healthy and clearly the people on magazine covers are healthy and confident with themselves.

Oh no hun, I’m not talking about that.

  • SubwayToVenus

Oh no hun, I’m not talking about that.

Then what are you talking about?

  • Anonymous

You’re talking about the music industry, the FASHION industry is supposed to be glamourous, if you don’t like it, then don’t take it, no one’s shoving a magazine up to your ass. It’s not the media the one’s who’s encharged of raising kids, of course there’s a misconception of what beauty is, but even if magazines started selling girls with greasy hair and a crooked nose, society will still judge, cause people are judgamental and that’s when each person has to learn to be above all of that.
    —–

We’re not talking about just the fashion industry. We’re talking about the media industry as whole. But even with the fashion industry, they need to stop having these “perfect, skinny, gorgeous” women who have no imperfections at all modeling clothes and being in our magazines. Model’s don’t need to be totally perfect. George Harrison’s wife who was a model had a major gap in her front teeth. Something a lot of people, including me, complain about because our teeth aren’t perfect. But she worked it and showed that you can be beautiful and not have perfect teeth. Same with Marilyn Monroe. She wasn’t a stick thin woman but that she showed that it was okay and she showed nothing but confidence.

  • SubwayToVenus

People should stop complaning though, after all, some Barbie looking girl on the cover of a magazine is 100% irrelevant, while all the huge names and amazing legendary people happen to be mostly fucked up and far from flawless, so people really do make a big deal out of everything.

  • Anonymous

In my opinion, I don’t feel sorry for fat girls. They know its unhealthy yet they kee shoving mcds down their throats. Idc what you guys say, a fat girl looks sloppy, & gross in a bikini.

  • SubwayToVenus

You’re right but it’s YOUR mistake to think those models have no flaws and are perfect, they’re not, some are even disgusting, and as long as you keep thinking those women have no imperfections it’ll always be hard. And I agree, I think ATTITUDE makes a woman beautiful to be honest, and that’s what everyone should learn.

It depends on the shirt. Adult sized small t-shirt are like a dress on me but I can fit anywhere between a small and a x-large in kids. It’s weird. I still in kid sized bottoms because I don’t have much of a waist. I’m always being told to to wear heels but they’re not help because they don’t come in my size.

If a club doesn’t let me in, I’ll call the fire department or health inspector and say they’re over-capacity. lmao.

But why does it have to be like that? It doesn’t. The entertainment industry is supposed to be about just that, entertaining. Not looks and glamor. Their job is supposed to be about being good at what they do whether it be singing, acting, dancing, playing instruments, etc
    ——–
you might not believe this but there are actually people who like to look at girls with nice body’s (e.g. victoria’s secret models)in glamorous outfits and think that’s entertaining without feeling the need to starve themselfes afterwards. and there are people in the inustry that don’t fit the ideal look but are still very successful (adele) and others who really are average talented but are prefered for their looks (selena gomez) but you don’t have to support them do you? it’s your own choice, just like everybody else.

No, it’s the MEDIA’s fault for drilling it into our heads that we’re never prefect enough unless we lose as much weight as possible, wear a shit load of makeup, get taller, dress fashionable, fix the tiniest little things on us like freckles, have perfect teeth, etc. If it wasn’t for them, we wouln’t be thinking this way.

why? if you have enough conifdence to give a fuck about what others think it doesn’t matter what you look like because confidence makes beautiful ;)

Signed the petition, but I don’t think the magazines are really to blame. Bullies are..they make people feel so bad about themselves that they think this type of perfection has to be right. And it’s not. But I do completely agree that obesity is disgusting. And btw, being a size zero is fine as long as you are HEALTHY as a zero. I’m a zero and I’m not healthy because of Celiac Disease, but I just got diagnosed and now I will GET healthy.

  • Anonymous

From a guy’s point of view: yes confidence makes you beautiful, but a confident fat girl..NOT attractive.

  • SubwayToVenus

I don’t think anyone should call someone fat, but if a person feels fat, themselves and clearly are not confident enough to put on a bikini, instead of blaming it on the whole wide world they should do something for themselves, like working out, not heavily, but maybe going to pilates, or to the gym twice a week, eating healthy, fruit, meat, vegetables because everyone should feel comfortable with their bodies, doesn’t mind if people think you’re fat or skinny, as long as you feel fine with your body, it’s easy to tell when someone loves their body and it’s also easy to tell when someone hates their body and I think girls mostly, are a lot prettier when they believe in themselves, no matter how they look like, so if someone finds something about their appearance they don’t like, they should choose a healthy way of changing it, not for society, for themselves.

NOT FOR THE PEOPLE, but YOURSELF, even without tv women would tight their hairs and wear fancy dresses to the ball, was it the media’s fault? not everybody feels the need to be perfect though, i could look like a model if i wanted to. i’m 5’9 and have a figure simular to selena gomez’ and with a bunch of workout and a no carbs and sugar diet i could have the body of a cover girl but i’m just too lazy and i love my fast-food and candy every once in a while way too much to do that. i’m healthy and content.

It’s not about looking pretty. Because anybody could look pretty by changing a few things temporary for a ball. It’s about the need the media sends forth to look perfect and flawless. And once you see a celebrity unglamorized on a normal day they scrutinize them because they are looking like normal human beings.

  • Anonymous

    Yeah except, it’s TRUE.

  • SubwayToVenus

For instance, I have a friend who’s overweight, I don’t like the word fat, so I’ll use overweight, but she has a pretty face and she’s always smiley and she takes care of her skin, she brushes her hair and she wears soft and classy make up, she always looks STUNNING and happy and confident and boys LOVE her and they choose her over skinny girls with an ugly and careless attitude.

When does the media send that message? when they put make up on celebs or photoshop them? WHO CARES, Kim Kardashian is considered hot by the whole male population and the media takes her as a fucking joke, Adele is considered fat and she’s fucking flawless and everyone loves her, that’s what the media is selling too, stop reading between the lines and take from the media what you find positive and ditch what you find toxic.

everybody is always like “there’s so many kids with eating disorders and it’s so unhealthy” or “teens feel the need to be thin” or such things but nobody ever speaks about how many obese people are out there (much more than anorexics)and how unhealthy that is. they should start promoting healthy diets and workout’s to prevent kid’s from starving themselfes to loose weight.

  • m

    Here’s the thing….
with makeup done correctly, most celebrities look pretty close to perfect, even without photoshopping. Most actresses are also underweight. In LA, if the actresses don’t look perfect and thin, they usually don’t get the good roles. These magazines may photoshop them to make them look MORE attractive, but the majority of them are already very very attractive. But keep in mind, these people are all getting their makeup done by professional makeup artists, and their hair done, as well. They are being dressed up by professional wardrobe stylists to ensure that they look the best they can.

And when I’m saying attitude is everything, it is, Jessica Simpson gains some weight and everyone is calling her a fat whore, while NO ONE would dare to call Adele a fat whore, why? because she has been amazing from the very beginning. Attitude is 90% of your image.

theres not much “airbrushing” to make miley look pretty. she already is. Justin doesn’t need much airbrushing either. its taken outta context.

Sure they see Kim as a joke but they also see her as being perfect looking and having the perfect ass. The only reason she’s around in the industry is because of her looks. I got to give it to Adele though that she’s breaking the rules which good for her. You have to be blind though if you don’t see that the media puts pressure on those who may be overweight. Like look at Raven Symone. She admitted to being forced to lose weight because she was being scrutinized. It was nothing about being healthy for her.

well for example in the past 140 pounds used to be the glamorous and sexy thing (curves) and if media wants to make that happen again it certainly can .off course the models would have to be at least CUTE but yk it would be not that hard to copy (even if it takes makeup for some people lol)and it would be realistic

It’s not the media’s fault I’m so insecure, especially since I’m skinny and a lot of celebs are starting to promote curves now. It’s my fault for letting them get to me and affect how I see myself. You can be the ugliest person in the world but if you have a personality and present yourself well, people will like you.
