Believe it or not, coincidences in song writing happen. I write songs for fun at home & a few times i’ve heard songs on the radio years later that have a similar or exact line in it. It’s always shocking for me, but i’m not dumb enough to believe that they’ve heard my song. And who the crap is this dude? He just assumes she’s a fan & decided to steal a line?

All Too Well is my favorite song on her new album. I’m not her biggest fan, but girl is a great songwriter. Get over it.

whos to say there isn’t some one thats unknown and writes lyrics as a hobbie and wrote exactly the same line of lyrics? lets face it the world is so big that your not going to be the only person to put a few words together, theres probably people all over the world who wrote lyrics identical to that with out even hearing the song. and maybe she has heard the song, but often when writing you can just forget, maybe it was a mistake from listening to the song and then later on writing something similiar with out even realizing? when someone says something to me or i’m listening to something while i’m writing i sometimes write what the words the persons telling me with out realizing. i think it was probably a mistake but basically every song on the radio is the same ‘drink drink, sex sexx, hung over’ they basically all just have the same lyrics so i don’t care about this at all. it should be an honour for someone to look up to you and be inspired.

  • TeamTayTay

last time i checked everyone knows who taylor swift is who the fuck is this matt noobanson? lol what a joke. taylor swifts writes all her lyrics all unique and how she feels who gives a shit tho? she’ll be a billionaire when she’s 25. he is a nobody.

  • Anonymous

Pfft, dude just wants attention. It’s a similar line, no it isn’t sung the same way, either.

  • Anonymous

Trying to ride off of Taylor’s fame I see, how pathetic…

  • xAskTaylorx

I don’t know, but we will see in the coming days if she is a “thief” or not..

  • JesusBale

All of you are saying “It’s just one line” But I think we all know that if it was you that it happened to you would be pissed off too.Put yourself in his shoes before mouthing off about it.

  • Anonymous

The lyrics are waaaaaaaay too similar to be on purpose. She would never knowingly steal a line, that’d just be stupid on her part, as well as on her record label’s. She probably didn’t realize it was already in a song, its not like its some complicated amazing never thought of lyric.

  • SlimShady

I don’t even like her, but plenty of songs have the same lines, if she copied two or three then yes, but just one isn’t stealing, it could be a coincidence.

  • Sparks

    Pathetic attention seeker… bye

  • Anonymous

Thats like one of the song writing rules TBH
Stealing lyrics is one of the rules
I know it because Im a lyricist too and they advice to do so…all of them…

  • Anonymous

Guess he’s a little butt-hurt, since his song was released way back in 2003
    It’s a common line (phrase)…

  • Anonymous

So sick of the Taylor fans saying big deal if someone did that to a song I wrote I’d be saying it to every line someone writes can make them a lyrical genius and she sits there acting like its her diary and each line means somthing to her when she clearly took that that’s not a coincidence at all that’s a pretty long sentence for it to be a coincidence and he’s not trying to ride on her fame he’s calling her out cuz she definatley stole that jeeze people stop sucking up to Taylor and defending her wake up and face reality she isn’t such a boo hoo little princess you think she is

  • Anonymous

She wouldn’t steal! She’s so fucking big, she wouldn’t make a scandal cause of 1 fucking line!!!!
They’re very similar, yes, they are. Maybe she listened to it and when writing the song she remembered of it, but not ‘stealing’! Steal and thief are BIG words! You cannot say it unless is really truth.
He’s trying something bad! He could talked to her without making a lot of noise out of it….
Well, we’ll see hoe Taylor will react.

  • damselchelle

I wouldn’t put it past her.

  • Anonymous

The line is common. We’re not constantly making up new words for the english language so sometimes, we’ll say the same thing as someone else…this guy just has to deal with the fact he said a similar line and didn’t get as much fame/money for it.

  • Anonymous

all of the taylor fans taking up for her, lol. if you were in matt’s shoes and someone stole one of your lyrics, you can’t tell me that you wouldn’t be pissed. the lines in the song and the tune are far too similar for her not to have taken it from him. plus they’re in practically the same place in both songs. this isn’t the first time taylor’s been called out on stealing other’s lyrics either. taylor likes matt, she’s written his lyrics on her arm before on tour and there’s no doubt that she’s listened to that song before. maybe she remembered it spontaneously and forgot that she knew it from one of his songs, i don’t know. but regardless, she probably stole it.

  • Anonymous

“it should be an honor for someone to look up to you and be inspired.”
being inspired by someone and completely jacking their lyrics are two different things.

  • Anonymous

He doesn’t want the attention that’s why he deleted the twitter comment 4 days ago. Knowing Matt better than any of Taylor’s supporters here, I am positive it was just picking on the situation knowing it was coincidence. I like Taylor and I really like Matt. If he admits to it being anything more than sarcasm then I will stop being a fan of his.

  • Anonymous

just like with her song eyes open sounding JUST LIKE needtobreathe’s keep your eyes open. she must think that because they’re not as popular as she is that she can get away with it. FALSE. girl needs to wisen up. she could get sued

  • Anonymous

    Umm..okay really?… It’s a very common line..

  • Anonymous

    Shut up.

  • Anonymous

Taylor is a fan of Matt’s so, I’m pretty sure that she’s heard the song. She written lyrics to Matt’s songs on her arms for concerts before. You can’t blame Matt for this. He wrote the song in 2001 but, it didn’t come out until 2003. I’ve been a fan of Matt’s for years and years and he’s a wonderful performer and song writer.

  • SellyismygirlCrush

I have no idea who is but lol I like his tweet, considering the amount of song singers copy these days this is nothing.. don’t care

  • Anonymous

Is this guy that desparate for Attention much i mean honestly one little line which she clearly was unawsre she copied grow up dude and haters Hate breeds Hate

  • Kat

I think the line of lyrics wasn’t that complex and it isn’t difficult to believe that two people would think of the same line. Maybe he should shoot her an email about it to make sure instead of tweeting about it. That sends the wrong message and is petty because he is being childish about it. He is old enough to know better about how to handle that situation. If he was really honestly mad about it he could have filed a lawsuit. What does tweeting about it do? Gain him attention?

  • Anonymous

‘completely’ no not really seeing as it’s not word to word.

  • Anonymous

I’m a big Taylor fan. And i’ll admit, the lines are pretty much the exact same, and i’m actually quite surprised that her album producers, etc wouldn’t have picked up on the similarities, considering the consequences it could bring.

That being said, this guy whining on twitter is clearly him seeking attention. He could have quietly gone about the whole lawsuit route (which of course, would have eventually been broken by the press anyways). But instead he is whining on twitter. That right there makes me think he doesn’t care so much about the lyric “theft” as he does the attention that he will receive publicly trashing her.

  • Anonymous

I’ve seen people do the research and apparently only 2 songs use a line like that, His-which came in 2003, and Taylor’s song.
    Yup, that’s such a common used sentenced…not!

They’re too similar to think it was an accident and she’s even admitted to being a fan of his and writing his lyrics on her arm.

Shame on her. She even took from Saving Jane a few years back.Too bad she keeps getting away with it :/

  • Anonymous

i love them both but anyone who takes any time to know Matt Nathanson knows that he is the biggest joker of all time. He’s always making sarcastic comments…the tweet was a JOKE poking fun at how lame people are for buying into all the drama…Yes Taylor is a fan of his, and yes he loves her in return (he’s even joked she could kick babies and he would still love her)

neither of them are making a big deal about it, its a complete fan war so just let it die out…their both amazing songwriters and amazing artists

Its ONE LINE, the songs are completely different and Matt himself has done the exact same thing by using someone elses lyrics. This was also a Co-written song from Taylor swift and Liz rose and I doubt Taylor Knowingly did it. The phrase probably was in the back of her mind but she couldnt place it.

  • Anonymous

oh my god! shut up! … um how many artists have similar lines in their songs… ALOT!! its not a big deal its not the same song its not the same beat yeah she kinda sings it in a similar way but its different he says need she says needed… this guy needs to shut up and so do haters. its not like other artists havent done this!! his wanting attention!!!

  • Lauren

I know right. Especially that she is a fan, she wouldn’t risk getting caught. Plus, that’s the sort of line that anyone could feel/write. Anddd, even if she did, it’s like one line. Not two lines, or three lines. Jesus. That guy’s a twat haha.

  • xAskTaylorx

Why would she “steal” lyrics? He just wants a little attention, and so what, a little line. Nothing big! She would never do that knowing this would probably be a “scandal” because she is a good song writer. I’ll take a listen…

  • SlimShady

If lyrics are not exactly the same then its not stealing. Doubt Tay needs to steal lyrics, anywho.

  • Sara

Its just one line. Jesus. It’s not like she stole the beat or the tune or the whole song.

  • Anonymous

Taylor is an amazing lyricist and does not need to use anyone elses lyrics, she has done a pretty good job at writing four albums and he’s gonna get all whiny over one lyric. Complete coincidence and he is just trying to grab whatever attention he can.

  • Anonymous

not surprised, she’s done similar things to other artists before. The reason half her lyrics are so good is because she copies other artists. #teamnathanson

  • Cesca DR

I don’t think Taylor needs to steal lyrics from anyone. And the fact that the line was used in different contexts.

  • Anonymous

    thief!!!

jajajaj but i guess she had had enough ex’s to write songs :)

  • Anonymous

that’s DEFINITELY not a coincidence. that line is even sung with very similar rhythm and in the same place in each song.

  • Anonymous

even though it’s just one line, it’s still clearly plagiarism. she sings that line in almost the exact same tune to his line too!

  • Anonymous

    ouch she totally did.

  • Anonymous

wow you all are acting like her lyrics are that creative. taylor appeals to a good wide spread target audience and she knows how to write lyrics that appeals to the masses but they are hardly creative or artistic so of course a line or to is going to sound like someone else’s.

  • Anonymous

Matt, is a talented and established musician who has been in the industry for almost 20 years now with 7 albums. So I’m pretty sure he’s not doing this for attention and he’s more talented than Taylor Swift at song writing and musical composition too.

Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if she listened to his music and accidently wrote his lyrics into her song. It happens some times when artists are inspired by other musicians. That being said the lyrics is unmistakably similar and so is the music attached to it.

  • Anonymous

how dare you call Matt Nathanson a ‘Twat’ or ‘no body’. You probably have never heard of him because you probably only listen to music on the radio or music produced by Hollywood records. You know another reason, why alot of you teeny boopers haven’t heard of him, its because he’s actually a talented musician who doesn’t write lyrics for fame, he writes lyrics with meaning and depth which is why alot of people don’t like him.

Matt Nathanson is not a nobody. He is a internationally recognised, talented and established musics with 7 studio albums. He has been signed for almost 20 years now, with alot of his music featured on various television shows like Vampire Diairies, One Tree Hill, Smallville and NCIS, to name a few. He’s toured around the world, multiple times in his career.

To last almost 20 years in the music industry is a major accomplishment as many artist are dropped from their label when their sales go down.

  • Anonymous

The songs are totally different except for 1 line. He needs to get over himself.

  • Me

    “doesn’t write lyrics for fame”
LOL of course he does, he just doesn’t succeed at it.

  • Anonymous

You know, not everyone plays music for fame. Just the talentless people you listen to.

  • Anonymous

You guys keep bitching and moaning about how it isn’t stealing but you’re wrong. Would it not be stealing if I used “baby it’s a lovestory please just say yes” but changed it to “babe its a love story please just say yes”. Yes it would be. Hypocritical bitches

  • Anonymous

If he really believed she stole it, he would have contact his lawyer instead of tweeting it.

  • Anonymous

    OH NO!
The first line of Matt Nathanson’s 2008 song Come on Get Higher is “I miss the sound of your voice”

That EXACT line is from a Motley Crew song If I Die Tomorrow released in 2005.

  • Anonymous

Stealing is stealing. she knows who Matt is and honestly I don’t think he was as butt hurt about it as the way some of you are making him out to be since he deleted it. I don’t care how long or short the lyric is, it’s his and when you don’t ask to use it it’s called plagiarism. Even when you say a famous person name in a song YOU HAVE to have permission AND you have to pay them and that’s just a name. She took a whole damn line. If It was mine I wouldn’t be too happy about it, and I’m pretty sure if it was any of you all you wouldn’t be so lighthearted about it either.
