I may not be able to speak it, but I can at least understand it. Believe me my grandma (may she rest in piece) taught me when I was just a baby. As I got older it become more English in my household since my dad isn't hispanic. I tired learning in school but mexican spanish is a little different than argentinian spanish, so that didn't really help.
Selena is Mexican, and if you know mexicans, they are all different colors, some white, some like tan skin like her, some dark brown, and black.

I agree with all, all, all of this. As for the bolded part, my family stopped speaking Italian about four generations ago, and I still made it my business to study Italian. I wasn't going to let lack of family's ability to speak the language affect my connection to my heritage. I also speak Hebrew, as my mom is Jewish, and I speak Spanish even though I have no heriditary connection to the language. It's amazing to speak multiple languages, even one I don't "have" to know, but heriditary connections should be all the reason needed to be the driving force to learn the language. It's almost an insult to not know the language, like you couldn't be bothered, and that's not the message you want to send out.
And since we're speaking about Selenas, Selena Q. wasn't fluent in Spanish either, and she made it her business to be able to communicate with the Latino community, especially when she was interviewed by the media. No reporter was going to show her up with lack of speaking ability.

Actually I do know something. I was going off the simplified basis of race in which people of Central American/South American ancestry are Hispanic. You're digging deeper than that obviously, but people from Mexico are considered Hispanic, at least here in the United States. Therefore Selena is Hispanic from her father's side. Exactly! Besides it's been proven that knowing multiple languages is very valuable. Those who are can speak fluent languages have a higher capacity for learning and often have heightened intelligence. It's in everybody's best interest to learn a second language when they're young.

We were persecuted like latinos are here in the U.S. by racist biggots who were native to the country. When we moved up here to the U.S. we were persecuted because we lived in a Spanish speaking country. I have to live here, so I speak the language. I don't have to live in the other country and have no urge to learn or keep their heritage. Just like the Jews don't have the urge to speak German or sing Adle Veis. Not all experiences are positive ones. Not all people in foreign countries are nice. You're version of the world doesn't apply for 90 percent of the people in it. I do know my roots VERY well thank you!! A language will not justify my roots or help me remember where I come from. Just b/c I can't speak it doesn't mean I don't care, and just b/c I don't know Spanish or another language doesn't mean I can't understand it.
Well, you see, that's a far more nicest way to say it. There's no need to be so hurtful. But then again, it's not always 'laziness'. There are many factors out there that could stop someone from learning a language.

I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to offend. I agree there are many factors that could prevent someone from learning a language. I, myself, would find it very difficult to learn Chinese if I wanted to learn it. But people who come from families of a certain heritage who speak a certain language should know how to speak that language, should they not? That's my only point.
