My brother used to be a drug addict and he would tell you the same things. In fact he was so good at pretending to be healthy and happy we didn't even know he was doing illegal drugs until he confessed to us after he stopped doing them. Some people can hide their addictions really well, it's called being a functioning addict.

I don't think Nick listens to Joe at all, when Joe was asked if he gives Nick advices he laughed and said he gives advices to me, he knows.
