Ariana Grande SUED For ‘The Way’

ariana-grande-jingle-ball-princess (3)Ariana Grande, Sony/ATV, UMG Recordings and others have been hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit over ‘The Way,’ reports THR.

The plaintiff is Minder Music, a UK entity which owns rights to songs written and recorded by The Jimmy Castor Bunch, an American disco and funk group that achieved success in the 1970s. One song in particular was 1972’s ‘Troglodyte,’ which included the spoken phrase, ‘What we’re gonna do right here is go back, way back, back into time.’

Re phrase has showed up in the works of others, including N.W.A and Christina Aguilera. It’s ‘iconic,’ says Minder Music, and can’t be used without license. It sounds ‘substantially similar’ to ‘What we gotta do right here is go back, back into time.’

Minder Music is seeking a declaration of willful infringement, a permanent injunction, statutory damages of $150,000 per infringement, and further attorneys’ fees.

So its not her though getting sued. Its the company. That’s stupid.

record labels need to stop being lazy and double check everything if they are going to sample

    • laura

actually, it’s quite ridiculous to be able to claim a sentence.
I get it when it’s an entire song or a tune but just one sentence?

The thing is if people start to sue over just a few words being the same that would mean there’s about a million & 1 songs that could be sued! it’s jokes. Fair enough if you’re talking the full on melody of a song, or a verse where the record company hasn’t sought out the correct permission but this is just slightly stupid.

  • anongirl

You’re suing that amount of money for one sentence?

  • kayla

I just listened to The Way and the funny thing is that the phrase adds nothing to the song. You don’t really need it. Everyone can hear for themselves that the song is a kind of throwback

  • BangBang

Minder Music is clearly in need of money.

  • RedneckAtHeart

Sounds like someone needs to build a bridge and get the fuck over it. It’s a freaking sentence! I would understand if it were a whole verse of the melody even, but a damn sentence?!? I mean really?

i always thought it sounded like beyonce’s check on it
