I think Justin had always been like obsessed with Selena in the way best friends are with their best friend when they're stuck with someone else. Selena was all about Nick and Justin was her "little brother" and I think he kind of did everything to win her and you could tell Selena's always wanted someone who would show her off and treat her the way Justin did. I believe they genuinely cared about each other but with all of these rumours of Justin being immature and cheating on her, it's hard to forgive. I hope Selena gives him a second chance cause Justin's been a really good boyfriend to her, putting her before his fans and career.
