Debby Ryan’s Jessie Prescott Engaged!

debby-ryan-engagedDebby Ryan’s Jessie character Jessie Prescott, 22, accepts her boyfriend’s proposal of marriage on the show. Disney Channel VP said: ‘Jessie is an adult, and we felt we could tackle this in a way that still feels appropriate for our audience.’ The Disney Channel focuses on children ages 6 to 11, with “Jessie” also attracting 9-to-14-year-old ‘tween’ viewers among its average weekly audience of 2.9 million viewers.

Debby Ryan stars as the young Texas woman who moves to New York City to pursue acting and becomes the nanny for an affluent family with children adopted from India, Africa and America. The comedy, in its third season, airs a mix of new and repeat episodes at 8 PM EDT Friday.

The budding relationship between Jessie and her new love, 25-year-old Brooks (Pierson Fode), is handled chastely, as befits a Disney project aimed at youngsters. The couple is shown bonding over picnics in Central Park and on movie dates and in other such innocent moments.

‘The way we deal with this romance is very pure Disney fairy tale.’

Ryan, who will turn 21 on May 13, said she is far from tying the knot with her boyfriend of a year, Twenty One Pilots musician Josh Dun. Her focus is on her career, including directing her first episode of “Jessie” this season and finishing an album she plans to release in June.

‘In the last year, we have seen close friends, five of them, get engaged, five. ..One couple is getting married next month and they are both 20, a year younger than me.’ She sees marriage and commitment as ‘delicate’ topics for the young viewers who watch her character for clues to growing up: “Your principal character is deciding whether or not she should start her life with a man.

Our audience isn’t dealing with somebody proposing to them, but they are dealing with choices they have to make in their life, and thinking things through, following their heart and wanting to make the right choice.

It’s not about the dress, it’s not about the wedding. It’s about the marriage. That’s something we lose sight of when we’re so young and all we want to do is dress up and play fairy tale.’

Getting married at 22 is so stupid. WAIT! You’re going to live for 60 or so more years, why get married now? What’s wrong with dating? I think this sends an awful message. A 22 year old wouldn’t have their life together, or plans for the future, what an awful period in life to get married.

The characters actually twenty… I mean what twenty year old would get married. I don’t know why they’re making her get married. Jessie is still a kid. The reason why I know she’s twenty is if you go season by season she started of at eighteen and its just season three meaning that she just turned twenty. Just because she’s a young nanny doesn’t mean that shes mature enough to get married especially at twenty years old.

My parents got married young. It happens all the time and is perfectly fine.

I’m just pissed that’s she’s not marrying the doorman.

    • Emma Stone

same. My parents have been together since they were 18 and they’re still happy and together now. I always feel slightly offended for them when people start complaining about how getting married at a young age is some sort of sin.

I agree, the fact that people are young doesn’t doom the marriage. 18 is no different than 28, some people are just ready earlier than others.

Totally agree there are people in their 40s that should never get married.

Because Jessie doesn’t look nor act like an adult I could see why this could be a problem. I don’t watch this show on a regular bases so when I first watched it I didn’t know she was an adult.

22 is too young in today’s terms. I don’t watch the show but at 22 you are still at college and focus on setting up your career before marriage.

instead of having her ACTUALLY get married they should have her get engaged but then something happens… so they don’t get married
