Selena Gomez returned to the spotlight at Sunday night’s 2016 American Music Awards after taking a break from the industry and seeking treatment for depression and anxiety at a Tennessee rehab facility. The singer wound up as this year’s “Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist” and she broke the silence surrounding her hiatus in a powerful acceptance speech that moved all of Hollywood.
Best friend Taylor Swift watched the show unfold from home and recorded a room full of screams as Selena accepted the award. Camila Cabello shared Selena’s emotional speech and expressed love via Twitter. Lady Gaga, the official AMAs cheerleader, dubbed Selena as the “biggest rockstar of the night” in an Instagram post.
The support flooded in even before the award show began. Ariana Grande spoke with Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet and had so many kind things to say about Selena. “I literally almost cried when I saw her,” Ariana said. “I haven’t talked to her in a long time. So, I don’t know what’s going on, but I gave her a huge hug and she looks beautiful. And I’m so happy that she’s here. I’m happy to see her out and about.” Ariana was later photographed greeting Selena affectionately inside the venue.
