With all events considered, it might seem like a miracle to have made it out of 2016 alive. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for some of your favorite celebrity relationships. This year resulted in a massive amount of breakups that ranged from scandalous to downright unexpected. A few splits could be seen from a mile away while others left fans feeling hopeless.
Grab some popcorn, or a box of tissues, and let the rocky trip down celebrity breakup lane begin.
12. Brooklyn Beckham & Chloë Grace Moretz
In an unsurprising turn of events, Brooklyn Beckham and Chloë Grace Moretz split just a few months after confirming their relationship. Not much has been said directly from the former couple, but they suddenly stopped spending time together. Awkwardly enough, a feature in Teen Vogue came out very soon after the reported breakup and the actress cozied up to Brooklyn on the cover.
11. Ariana Grande & Ricky Alvarez
Ariana Grande broke things off with her backup dancer boyfriend Ricky Alvarez nearly a year after the two began dating. An E! News source assured everyone that the split was entirely amicable and that they remained friends. The source went on to say that Ariana was “happy to be single and do her for a little while,” which didn’t last long. Ariana confirmed her relationship with Mac Miller in September, but the rumors began closely after the news of her split with Ricky.
10. Zac Efron & Sami Miró
Sometimes the most painful things are left unsaid, which rings true surrounding the breakup between Zac Efron and Sami Miró. After a year of dating, the two dissolved their relationship without much confirmation. Zac did, however, delete all evidence of Sami on his social media accounts. Sami kept hers up, which made the situation harder to understand. Or forget.
9. Cara Delevingne & St. Vincent
Cara Delevingne and St. Vincent called off their year-and-a-half long relationship filled with intense love, reportedly due to Cara’s demanding “Suicide Squad” promo. A source told The Sun that “Cara and Annie still care about each other, but pressure of the long-distance romance just became too much.” A short while later, St. Vincent was romantically linked to Kristen Stewart. New reports, however, seem to suggest that the Cara and her ex might have rekindled their relationship or have at least started spending time together again.
8. The Weeknd & Bella Hadid
After nearly two years of dating, The Weeknd and Bella Hadid called it quits. “Their schedules have been too hard to coordinate and he is focusing on finishing and promoting his album,” a source told PEOPLE. “They still have a great deal of love for one another and will remain friends.” Unlike other celebrity breakups of the year, it seemed like they truly did end things amicably and it was very obvious during the 2016 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show–almost too obvious. The model strutted by her ex as he performed “Starboy” and they shared a moment that left the Internet in a state of confusion about whether or not they actually broke up. At the very least, they remain supportive of one another.
7. Bella Thorne & Gregg Sulkin
Bella Thorne and Gregg Sulkin’s PDA-filled relationship came to a close after a year of dating. The former couple lived together and often reminded fans of it. “After much thought and soul-searching, we have made the difficult decision to end our relationship,” they said in a joint statement. “We will always love each other and have a deep respect for one another, as we have each grown to be better people because of our time together. Our schedules made seeing each other difficult, and we decided that for now this would be best.”
About a month later, Bella’s broken heart healed enough to spark a new relationship with Tyler Posey. At first, Gregg didn’t seem to be sticking to the “deep respect” part of their breakup agreement, but who can really blame him?
6. Zayn Malik & Gigi Hadid
Perhaps the strangest breakup of 2016 was between Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid. Reports claimed they had been fighting on and off around the time of Gigi’s birthday, but no real confirmation ever seemed to make its way into the public. No one knew what to believe and no one, to this day, seems to have knowledge of what really happened. Just days after the first report, ZiGi’s trouble in paradise appeared to resolve itself and they got back together. The whole thing is still a mystery, really.
5. Lady Gaga & Taylor Kinney
Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney, a couple of five years, shocked a lot of people after calling off their engagement. The singer quickly clarified that they didn’t consider it to be a breakup, but rather a break. “Taylor and I have always believed we are soulmates. Just like all couples we have ups and downs, and we have been taking a break,” she wrote on Instagram. After detailing the hardships of their schedules and long distance, she went on to ask everyone to “please root us on.” Since then, the pair have remained in each others’ lives.
4. Iggy Azalea & Nick Young
Iggy Azalea broke off her engagement to NBA player Nick Young after months of insane drama, beginning with a video tape that showed an alleged affair and a threat to cut off half of Nick’s penis if “one more video” surfaced. “I broke up with Nick because I found out he had brought other women into our home while I was away and caught them on the security footage,” Iggy later revealed. The plot thickened when a woman came forward and announced she was pregnant with Nick Young’s baby as a result of his infidelity. Iggy’s legal team fired off warnings to his baby mama about serious liability if she were to use Iggy’s name in a book, interview or otherwise.
Since then, the drama died down and Iggy seems to have found happiness. The Australian rapper, without confirmation, has been spending a lot of time with French Montana. Even Nick Young hopes for the best.
3. Taylor Swift & Tom Hiddleston
Taylor Swift’s romance with Tom Hiddleston ended almost as quickly as it began. The entirety of their three-month relationship seemed like a publicity stunt and was rumored to have been part of Taylor’s split with Calvin Harris. “Tom has been courting Taylor since they met – he sent her flowers. She’s been won over,” a source told The Sun. If the source was correct, that would mean it all began at the Met Gala when Taylor and Calvin were very much still an item.
2. Demi Lovato & Wilmer Valderrama
Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama parted ways after nearly six years of dating and, in anticipation of a huge public reaction, immediately shared a joint statement. “After almost 6 loving and wonderful years together, we have decided to end our relationship,” their statement read. “This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends. We will always be supportive of one another. Thank you to everyone who has offered us kindness and support over the years.” Surprisingly, their promise to be supportive and friendly remained in tact. Demi even began a new relationship with Luke Rockhold and, to the naked eye, it doesn’t seem like Wilmer has anything bad to say.
1. Taylor Swift & Calvin Harris
The messiest of the messy, the big kahuna. Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris broke up after 15 months of dating and the initial report was just the tip of the iceberg. At first, the split was drama-free. “The only truth here is that a relationship came to an end & what remains is a huge amount of love and respect,” Calvin wrote on Twitter, which Taylor retweeted. Two weeks later, everything changed when Taylor Swift had quite publicly moved on with Tom Hiddleston. From there, all hell broke loose, which Calvin eventually discussed in an interview. Taylor was outed as the songwriter for Calvin’s hit with Rihanna, “This Is What You Came For.” That news and the way it was handled led to a nasty Twitter blast at the hands of Calvin, who was also dealing with Taylor’s new relationship. “I figured if you’re happy in your new relationship you should focus on that instead of trying to tear your ex bf down for something to do,” he wrote.
Word on the street is that Taylor and Calvin finally buried the hatchet and called a truce, but don’t hold your breath until that breakup album finally drops.
