In her first solo Billboard cover story, Camila Cabello is once again discussing what went on with Fifth Harmony that may have led to her move towards a solo career. “You have to follow and honor that inner voice. I always encouraged the girls to do the same,” the singer says. It may have been that urge that “rocked the boat” on the group’s ongoing tension.
The singer’s departure from the group is starting to mirror that of Zayn Malik’s abrupt exit from One Direction. From not being able to sing what she wanted all the way down to not being comfortable with the look management tried to force on her, the days after Camila quit Fifth Harmony felt like déjà vu. The singer hasn’t spoken to any of the girls since unceremoniously saying peace out to the group, although, like Zayn, she has unsuccessfully tried to reach out.
“I don’t want to get into the details of that, because it was really intense and it’s hard for me to talk about. It makes me sad,” she admits. Camila attempts to take the high road and reveals that her solo news may not have received the well wishes she expected from the remaining girls. “I hoped that it would be a peaceful turning of the page and we would root for each other,” she adds. “But I only got love for them.”
If the remaining members of Fifth Harmony aren’t ready to watch Camila move on without them, they better brace themselves. With new music on the way and two successful solo singles under her belt, Camila is showing no signs of slowing down.
