Channel 93.3 in San Diego hosted a blowout summer concert on Friday night. The musical acts brought their early contenders for song of the summer as DNCE, Halsey, Niall Horan, Noah Cyrus and Hailee Steinfeld all took the stage with varying degrees of energy, skill and pyrotechnics.
DNCE performed “Kissing Strangers,” which livened up a setlist of the band’s old standards like “Cake By The Ocean,” “Body Moves” and “Toothbrush.” Anyone worried about what the track might sound like without featured artist Nicki Minaj got to experience Cole Whittle rapping. The band impressed with a seamless mashup of covers of “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls, “Oops! I Did It Again” by Britney Spears and Kanye West’s “Fade.”
Niall Horan’s set didn’t quite have the high energy of DNCE or the awe-inspiring visuals of Halsey’s, but it did have new music from the One Direction member. Alongside his new song “Slow Hands,” Niall played “On The Loose,” rumored to be another track from his upcoming debut solo album.
Meanwhile, Hailee Steinfeld danced her way through “Love Myself” and Noah Cyrus struggled with another live performance as she brought “Make Me (Cry).”
