Fifth Harmony, Ed Sheeran And Taylor Swift Are The Most Unexpected Winners At The 2017 MTV VMAs

Fifth Harmony, Ed Sheeran And Taylor Swift Are The Most Unexpected Winners At The 2017 VMAs featureKendrick Lamar was in a class of his own on Sunday night at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards. He took home awards for “Video of the Year,” “Best Hip Hop” and four more, but he wasn’t the only artist to take a trophy home. The night’s other big winners were harder to predict. But Fifth Harmony, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran shocked the world with wins.

Ed admitted his own surprise at winning “Artist of the Year” on Instagram, explaining why it was the “worst acceptance speech” he’s ever done. Ed, who also took the stage with Lil Uzi Vert at the top of the show, beat out Kendrick, Lorde, The Weeknd, Bruno Mars and Ariana Grande for his unexpected trophy. Ed’s pal Taylor Swift seized the top honors in another category.

Aside from debuting her shady new video, Taylor earned a VMA for “Best Collab” for “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever,” her team-up with Zayn. That beat collaborations from Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez, DJ Khaled and Rihanna, The Chainsmokers and Halsey and the Taylor hater’s club of Calvin Harris and Katy Perry.

Aside from dropping a fake Camila Cabello off the stage, Fifth Harmony’s song “Down” won “Best Pop Song” at the show. It beat out singles from Ed, Katy, Miley Cyrus, Harry Styles and Shawn Mendes. It’s also a feather in the cap of a girl group trying to prove it’s better as a foursome.
