There’s a reason Yara Shahidi was just named one of Time Magazine’s 30 most influential teens. The actress is an outspoken advocate on issues of race and gender, and her fans love her for it. Yara even finds a way to inject a little bit of activism into her on-screen work, and that’s part of what has fans so excited for her new show “Grown-ish.”
The “Black-ish” spinoff about Yara’s character going away to college debuts January 3, but a new trailer has some Yara diehards talking thanks to one true-to-life fashion choice. In one scene from the teaser, Yara’s character Zoey Johnson wakes up late for class in a durag. Yara tweeted a picture of the look, garnering some love from fans who are here for her Black girl magic.
In a separate tweet, Yara gave a shoutout to her hairstylist for helping her show off a natural look. She said she hasn’t used a flat iron or a curling iron is years and explained that the durag is vital when it comes to “#keepinitreal.”
According to the trailer, Zoey will have to face other common problems at college like a dad who misses her, a roommate who hates her and a couple of friends who use Adderall.
