Halsey may be posting content from her appearance at the 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show on social media. But she is also posting some pointed words aimed at the organization that runs the show about the need for it to be more inclusive.
Halsey appears to be reacting to comments made by a senior marketing executive at Victoria’s Secret following the taping of the fashion show in November that suggested the brand would not be open to putting “transsexuals” in the show. The comments and their ensuing controversy are thought to have expedited the departure of Jan Singer, embattled CEO of the Victoria’s Secret lingerie lines.
The CEO’s job, however, was likely already under pressure as VS brands have continued losing market share. Upstart labels like Third Love, Adore Me and Savage X Fenty have all gone directly after the lingerie market that Victoria’s Secret once dominated, and they have done so with more inclusive sizes, designs and marketing which all seem to be resonating better with millennial buyers.
In her statement, Halsey said –
I have adored the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show since I was young. Performing this year alongside other amazing artists … was supposed to be the best night of my year … However, after I filmed the performance, some comments were made regarding the show that I simply cannot ignore. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I have no tolerance for a lack of inclusivity …”
The “Without Me” singer then directed folks who came to her social media accounts after watching last night’s show to donate to GLSEN, an organization that offers services to protect and support LGBTQ+ youth.
