On this week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart, Halsey’s song “Without Me” jumped up a spot to finally overtake Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next” for the No. 1 position. The single is Halsey’s first No. 1 hit as a solo artist, and she took to social media to talk about what it meant to her.
“#1 on billboard, Halsey wrote. “Very overwhelmed,” she continued. “This achievement is completely beyond my means of comprehending right now so I’ll get back to you guys when I find more eloquent and compelling things to say.”
That’s when Ariana began a cute exchange after chiming in to offer Halsey some NSFW words of congratulations and girl-power encouragement on Halsey’s accomplishment. “F**k it up, @iamhalsey, Ariana commented. “To girls on top all 2019.”
“”Luv u bb,” Halsey wrote back. “Dynamic women who are headstrong + compassionate all 2019.”
Of course, the two hit singles “Without Me” an “Thank U, Next” do have a lot in common. Both are obviously songs based on difficult break ups. But more than that, in both cases, Halsey and Ariana had to break a number of industry rules to record and push out the songs on their own preferred terms and timelines, as neither song had been pre-planned with full record company marketing campaigns behind them.
The success of each track suggests that Halsey and Ariana’s instincts were right.

#1 on billboard. wow. very overwhelmed and confused and so very very very VERY happy. this song came from a very lonely place, and brought me to one of the most loved and supported moments of my lifetime. This achievement is completely beyond my means of comprehending right now so I’ll get back to you guys when I find more eloquent and compelling things to say. Right now my brain is a washing machine of emotion. On a very high cycle. I love you very much.
