Niall Horan was added to the performance lineup for this year’s American Music Awards, marking his return to the show’s stage sans One Direction. Previously announced performers include Fifth Harmony, Lady Gaga, Shawn Mendes, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj. The solo One Directioner will perform his debut single “This Town,” which even he admits is a snooze. The circumstances surrounding the 2016 AMAs could, in theory, cause enough excitement to overshadow Niall’s admittedly boring tune.
Zayn Malik, Niall’s former bandmate, is up for “Best New Artist” so he could likely be in attendance. If that’s not enough to get him to the red carpet, girlfriend Gigi Hadid’s hosting gig could seal the deal. Opportunities for super awkward audience, meaning Zayn, reactions could be that shiny glimmer of hope. Also, take a minute to imagine Gigi, devout Zayn supporter, responding to that performance, especially considering her recent One Direction digs.
For now, this all remains mountain-out-of-molehill speculation. Fans will find out how it all goes down this Sunday night at 8PM ET on ABC.
