Taylor Swift is facing a new legal challenge from some music industry veterans. According to TMZ, two of the songwriting minds behind 3LW’s 2000 song “Playas Gon’ Play” are suing her for copying their work on 2015’s “Shake It Off.” Nathan Butler and Sean Hall claim Taylor plagiarized the song’s famous hook and they want a 20% songwriting stake in the track as compensation.
A deal like that would mean a huge payout as songwriters earn royalties from sales, performances and uses in other media. Given the song’s high chart positions, gold and multiplatinum status in several countries and use in mainstream media, 20% could be a lot of money. Something tells us that Taylor isn’t about to fork over the dough.
