Charlie Puth is finally dishing on why he got passed over as a judge on the upcoming reboot of “American Idol.” Katy Perry got the job alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, but Charlie was in the running. He said the decision to pass on a chance to judge the singing reality show was a result of his concerns about scheduling.
Charlie Puth may have a new job once he’s done opening for Shawn Mendes. It is being reported that the singer is in talks to join Katy Perry on the judging panel for the “American Idol” reboot set to premiere on ABC.
According to TMZ, “show execs will meet with ABC this week to finalize their choices and make offers.” So far the list of possible judges include Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and former “American Idol” judge Keith Urban. If Keith decides to return to the singing competition, he will be seeing a familiar face as Ryan Seacrest will be hosting the updated series.

Katy Perry’s addition to the “American Idol” reboot is costing ABC a pretty penny. Actually, according to TMZ, it’s costing the network two and a half billion pennies as the network is paying Katy $25 million for the season.
TMZ previously reported that Katy was offered $20 million to take a spot on the show in 2012, but she turned that down. Her new rumored compensation is not only higher than that offer, it’s apparently also more than host Ryan Seacrest was making at the show’s peak.
Katy Perry is continuing her Miley Cyrus impression. After that drastic haircut had her looking the part, the latest news is that Katy will be joining a reality singing competition show on network TV. Katy’s not trying to take Miley’s spot on “The Voice,” but she is joining the ABC reboot of “American Idol” coming in 2018. Katy announced the news on social media.
The “Bon Appétit” singer also shared that she was “honored and thrilled” to be joining the show. Katy wants to make some “dreams come true” and she seems to have an especially keen interest in “discovering diamonds in the rough.” Katy promised to bring it “back to the MUSIC” in her announcement tweet.
While it’s easy to assume that Katy will take over for Paula Abdul as the resident washed-up pop star, fans had mixed reactions to the news. While KatyCats celebrated their idol’s new gig, Taylor Swift fans had something else in mind. Several tweeted requests for someone to audition for the show singing “Bad Blood,” Taylor’s song that she claims isn’t about Katy but everyone knows is.
