Selena Gomez received a kidney transplant from her best friend Francia Raisa over the Summer. The singer was able to keep the procedure a secret until she revealed the news and thanked her friend for the ultimate sacrifice through an Instagram post in September. In a interview with “TODAY,” Selena and Francia opened up about the procedure and the moments leading up to it.
Selena Gomez opened up about why she was out of the spotlight for part of this summer. The singer posted to Instagram about undergoing a kidney transplant result from her Lupus, writing a lengthy caption about her experience.
“I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of,” Selena wrote. “I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering.”
Selena continues to be one of the most prominent Lupus survivors in the world. Going public with with her kidney transplant is her latest move to raise public awareness. She also started a Lupus research fund with the University of Southern California to study the disease.
