When Selena Gomez revealed her nude cover photo for her upcoming album, some fans were shocked at the drastic image change that it represented for the former Disney star. But others were unsurprised, given the tone of comments from Selena over the last six months indicating that she was tired of the adolescent image that many in the media still seemed to associate with her work.
So like many child stars, the 23-year old pop star chose to “sex up” her image. But did Selena have a more specific inspiration for the black and white body imagery she’s decided to use in the social media marketing of “Revival?”
Yesterday, the “Good For You” singer tweeted side-by-side black and white photos of her “Revival” cover art and an older iconic image of Jennifer Aniston, showing the similarity between the two photo treatments. To the tweeted image, Selena added the handle, “#myidol.”
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Selena discussed how the two leading ladies met. “Honestly, [Jennifer] is amazing. We met through my management. They manage her as well, so it was kind of like a friendly meeting and instantly she’s, like, inviting me to her house . . . She’s very cool and very sweet.”
Since their initial meeting, Selena and Jennifer have continued to hang out, with Jennifer reportedly giving Selena advice and providing a kind of motherly influence.
Apparently, Jennifer’s influence includes inspiring Selena to get naked to promote her music. Now that’s what we call advice!
All things considered, do you think that the cover works? Or does it seem a little cheap and obvious?
