Lots of pop stars use songwriters to craft the hits that make or break their careers, but there’s only so many to go around and sometimes it can be a little awkward to work with someone’s ex. That’s what happened to Justin Tranter, the writer behind Nick Jonas’ “Close” and DNCE’s “Cake by the Ocean.” In an interview with CBS, Justin shared how he navigated the situation when he found out his song “Sorry” was getting picked up by Justin Bieber, the ex of his pal Selena Gomez.

Selena Gomez’s latest musical tease is just that. The former “Wizards Of Waverly Place” star shared video that looked like it came from inside a recording studio on Sunday night. But it wasn’t Selena hard at work on the mic. Instead, Selena was just offering some love to two of the songwriters who worked on her last album because one of them is launching her own solo musical career.
Julia Michaels has just launched her first single, “Issues,” and Selena celebrated with her friend/collaborator in the studio. Julia helped write several songs on “Revival,” including “Hands To Myself” and the title track. Julia’s been writing music for artists like Little Mix and Demi Lovato for a few years now. She also helped pen Justin Bieber’s “Sorry,” Fifth Harmony’s “All In My Head (Flex)” featuring Fetty Wap and Nick Jonas’ “Close” featuring Tove Lo.
The duo was joined by Justin Tranter, another writer with some serious credentials. Aside from all the work he’s done with Selena, Justin was in on the writing for several DNCE songs, including “Cake By The Ocean.”

Selena Gomez is working on new music and Nick Jonas is definitely here for it, possibly more than anyone else. Justin Tranter, the songwriter responsible for several of Selena’s hits and Nick’s “Close,” shared a photo of Selena on Instagram. “Music and love,” he wrote in the caption. Fans, of course, responded with joy, but Nick took the cake with a simple praise emoji.
