Miley Cyrus Talks 2015 VMAs, Calls Out Robin Thicke and Slams Nicki Minaj

Miley Cyrus Slams Nicki MinajIn a revealing interview with the New York Times, Miley Cyrus offered some surprising insights about how she got the 2015 VMA hosting gig, the real story behind her epic 2013 VMAs performance and her personal take on the Nicki Minaj / Taylor Swift feud.  It’s a good read.

On the 2015 VMAs, Miley explained how she came to accept the hosting gig.  “They said, ‘This is your party,” she revealed, adding that the show will be “psychedelic” and “raw”. Van Toffler, who is the former president of Viacom, originally contacted Miley with the idea to host this year’s awards. “He was like, “I want to do something crazy — I want you to host the V.M.A.s, because I want that to be my last shebang.” If you think Miley’s going to stick with the traditional format of the show, starting with some stand-up, you might want to get ready for some changes, “I’m not a stand-up. That’s what it always feels like — like everything’s flopping and dying out there. So my intro is fun skits.”

The interview then turned to the 2013 VMAs and Miley’s epic pop culture moment, the twerk heard round the world with “Blurred Lines” singer Robin Thicke. “Dude, it was insane. I became that girl — I was the face of twerking, which didn’t really matter. That wasn’t what it was about.”

Many people were outraged by the performance and put all of the blame on Miley even though it was actually Robin’s performance. “He acted like he didn’t know that was going to happen. You were in rehearsals! You knew exactly what was going to happen. And he was actually the one that approved my outfit, so I thought that was very funny.”

Also during the interview, Miley shed light on how she really felt about Nicki Minaj’s Twitter rant after the rapper was not nominated for “Video of the Year”. Her candid views might surprise some, coming down pretty hard on Nicki.  “If you want to make it about race, there’s a way you could do that. But don’t make it just about yourself,” Miley said. Nicki’s tweets created a war of words with Taylor Swift, who felt that she was being personally targeted.   Continue Reading →

The Weeknd Closes Out First Night of Record Breaking Billboard Hot 100 Festival

TheWeekndBillboardHot100The first day of the two-day Billboard Hot 100 Festival managed to make history. On Saturday, more than 17,000 fans attended the event at Jones Beach, New York, breaking the venue’s single day attendance record. Artists including Little Mix, Jason Derulo, Halsey, The Weeknd and Lil Wayne took the stage.

Halsey and Little Mix reportedly had strong performances during yesterday’s sets, but judging by the social media buzz, The Weeknd, may have left the biggest impression among the headliners. The singer covered Beyonce’s hit “Drunk In Love, and closed out the first night of the event with an “extra song” or encore performance of his hit, “The Hills”.

Justin Bieber will be the final act tonight, taking the stage right after friend Skrillex ends his set – so perhaps concert-goers will get to see the two collaborate on current hit “Where Are Ü Now.” Nicki Minaj, Fetty Wap, Tori Kelly and more will perform earlier sets.

See below to watch a fan-filmed performance of The Weeknd’s cover of “Drunk In Love” from last night.

Nicki Minaj Talks Twitter Feud with Taylor Swift Before a Cheering Crowd on Good Morning America

Nicki Minaj on GMAOn Good Morning America earlier today, Nicki Minaj was completely open about her Twitter comments regarding the VMAs and the subsequent “feud” with Taylor Swift.

With respect to her original complaint agains the VMA’s nominating process, Nicki went into a little more detail about her original concerns. Nicki’s first point was that, just in terms of sheer stats, her “Anaconda” video should have been up for consideration for Video of the Year. “I was just saying … I posted something on my Instagram and it showed the stats of other videos that had been nominated previously and there just seemed to be a little funny business goin’ on.”  She then added that if she were “one of the pop girls” the results would have been different.

Her second point, though, was about body image in many of the videos that get nominations.  “I just think that we need to have both images for girls,” Nicki Said, “we can’t have only one type of body being glorified in the media because it just makes girls even more insecure than we already are.”

Nicki also gave lots of details about her feelings on Taylor Swift. “I spoke to Taylor Swift yesterday on the phone. She was super, super sweet. She apologized and said, ‘Look I didn’t understand the big picture of what you were saying but now I get it.’ So we’re all good.” She later added, “[we] spoke for a long time … we were cracking up on the phone … it’s over you guys.”

Nicki also felt that she was “sure” that she and Taylor could work on collaborations in the future, saying “it takes a big person to do what Taylor did, and everyone sometimes speaks out of turn. I’ve been there – sometimes we do things and we don’t think right away or we don’t investigate … it was big of her to come out and say that.”

So it appears that Nicki and Taylor might actually be on decent terms again. Which is probably good, because that would allow Taylor to turn her full attention to her real “straight-up enemies.”

We have Nicki’s full video interview below.

Do you think that Nicki and Taylor really are now “all good?”

Just as One Twitter Feud Ends, Two Others Begin: Camilla Belle Sides With Katy Perry in Taylor Swift Take-Down

Taylor Swift Katy Perry Camilla BelleTo many, Taylor Swift appeared to have regained her wits today when she apologized for inserting herself into Nicki Minaj’s Twitter beef with the powers that be at the VMAs. And for the most part, Nicki did appear to let the “Bad Blood” singer off relatively lightly by accepting her apology, professing her love and suggesting that fans move on

But ever since Katy Perry joined the conversation yesterday afternoon, this Twitter feud has no longer been just about Taylor and Nicki, let alone the Video of the Year nominations process. Katy’s tweet was the opening of a new and very direct front in a personal war between two of the world’s best-known popstars. And in this particular war, Katy received her own unexpected vote of support today, when actress Camilla Belle tweeted an unsolicited response to Katy’s jab at Taylor.

Camille Belle Response to Katy PerryTaylor and Joe Jonas fans will remember that Camilla was the woman who Joe allegedly dropped Taylor for during their younger and more formative years. In turn, Taylor is widely believed to have transformed that situation into her song, “Better than Revenge,” which contains some of the most scathing lines that Taylor’s ever written about a romantic rival:

Taylor Swift Apologizes to Nicki Minaj and the Two Singers Hug It Out

Taylor Swift Nicki MinajNo doubt disappointing literally millions of her worked-up fans, Taylor Swift appears to have just realized that she should have thought twice before she got into a heated exchange of tweets with Nicki Minaj over a perceived insult related to the VMA’s Video of the Year award. Two days into the beef, millions of Twitter timelines have witnessed the tweeted and retweeted jabs and rejoinders, and even a few celebs had joined the fray to take sides.

But now an armistice seems to have been negotiated between the two music superstars in the fight, if not among their respective legions of fans. Taylor Swift began the peace talks by issuing a flat out apology to Nicki Minaj on Twitter, acknowledging that she did get defensive over a few tweets that may not have had anything to do with her. She tweeted, “I thought I was being called out. I missed the point, I misunderstood, then misspoke. I’m sorry, Nicki.”

And after the Twitterverse had waited nearly an hour for some response from Nicki, the rapper seemed to hold no grudge:

Nicki later also responded to a fan who was happy that the two music icons had made up, writing “I’ve always loved her. Everyone makes mistakes. She gained so much more respect from me. Let’s move on.”

Ed Sheeran Defends Taylor Swift, Calls Nicki’s Arguments ‘Redundant’ … And Then Backpeddles a Bit

taylor swift and ed sheeran 4th of julySo some stars did decide to take sides in the Nicki Minaj / Taylor Swift Twitter feud. Last night, Taylor’s reported “Bad Blood” inspiration, Katy Perry, seemed to take Nicki’s side (or at least used the feud as an opportunity to pile on for her own purposes) and called Taylor out for being against pitting women against women … unless Taylor’s personally profiting from it.  In addition to Katy, singer Tinashe and rapper Taleb Kweli both came out with tweets more directly supportive of Nicki’s actual perspective, though Taleb may have surprised some folks by also noting that he is a big Taylor fan.

On the other hand, Taylor’s friend Ed Sheeran was all Team Taylor in comments he made to the The Daily Telegraph. Ed came strongly to the defense of his friend, reportedly saying “I think everyone knows that Taylor has done nothing wrong in that situation. She didn’t nominate herself for the awards. It’s not her fault … She just made some good videos and people think they’re good.”

In regards to Nicki’s arguments, Ed went on to say, “I think the Minaj point is a bit redundant. Her point is that you have to be skinny and white to get a video of the year nomination, but Beyoncé’s ‘7/11′ is in there and that is celebrating the female figure in every form,” the singer said.

After seeing his quotes in print, Ed did clarify things a bit by tweeting to Buzzfeed UK that his quotes were taken out of context and that he wasn’t talking so much about race, as about body image. But in context or not, we think that his general view of the situation is that, to the degree that there was bias of any type in this situation, the problem lies not with his friend Taylor, but really with the people who make the nominations for award shows.

Do you think Ed Sheeran should have minded his own business or was he right to defend his friend?
