It all got started when Nicki took to Twitter this afternoon to complain about what she saw as a number of snubs when the 2015 VMA nominations were announced. In particular, while Nicki received nominations in multiple categories for the video to her song “Anaconda,” that video was nevertheless left out of the running for the VMA’s biggest award, Video of the Year.
Nicki’s tweets suggested that the lack of Video of the Year nomination was unfair for two reasons. First, that her provocative video had a broader cultural impact than the other nominated videos and, second, that the nominating committee seemed to embrace biased cultural norms related to the body types of women celebrated by the nominated videos. Among other tweets complaining about the perceived snub, Nicki tweeted, “If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year.”
Apparently, as the slimmest-bodied woman among the nominees for Video of the Year (the other nominees being Ed Sheeran, Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, Kendrick Lamar and Beyonce), Taylor Swift took personal offense to Nicki’s rant:
