Zendaya stands alongside her “Spider-Man: Homecoming” co-star on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter’s Next Gen 2016 issue. Inside, the actress discusses her upcoming role by addressing the controversy surrounding a rumor that names her as Spider-Man’s leading lady Mary Jane Watson, which she doesn’t confirm or deny. Zendaya also talks about the “controlling” nature of Hollywood and how she’s become “an African American history professor” through her social media presence.
For the past week, reports of Zendaya landing the role of Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming “Spider-Man: Homecoming” film have remained a hot topic. While some people feel that because of the color of her skin Zendaya should not be playing MJ, others, like “Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn, think Zendaya would be perfect for the role. Now, the man behind the most popular Marvel characters is defending the actress and is even if favor of her playing the iconic character.
While most of the world hates on the fact that Zendaya could possibly be playing Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming “Spider-Man: Homecoming” film, one Marvel director is defending the star. James Gunn, who directed “Guardians of the Galaxy,” spoke out in defense of the Disney Channel star on Friday. James maintains that it should be about who’s the best for the role. “For me, what makes MJ MJ is her alpha female playfulness, and if the actress captures that, then she’ll work,” James wrote.
While the director neither confirmed nor denied the reports that Zendaya will be portraying the “Spider-Man” character, he did say that out of all the actresses that have played MJ, Zendaya is the best match. “And, for the record, I think Zendaya even matches what I think of as MJ’s primary physical characteristics – she’s a tall, thin model – much more so than actresses have in the past.”
