Diablo III – The Process That Made it The Third Best-Selling Computer Game

Whether you have started your Diablo III journey back in 2012 or just decided to start it today, the development process of Diablo III is an interesting and long one.

If you have been playing the game for some time, you probably know all about the characters, plots, and gameplay, however, if not, you might want to learn more about this hack & slash RPG game. In the text below, you will read about what it took to create this dungeon-crawler game, but, since there might be people who have started playing this game recently, we will first write about the gameplay and characters. Let’s take a closer look:

The Gameplay and Classes

Similarly to the first and second parts, the characteristics and condition of the equipment you can use are random.

Besides the basic stats which include attack speed and DPS, high-grade items have more features that provide players with additional damage, bonuses, critical hits, and sockets that are used for upgrading and customizing. Magic-grade items have 3 characteristics which are again completely random, rare objects have 6, and legendary have 8 with various levels of randomness.

The software engine includes Blizzard’s customized internal physics, and it features of destroyable environments with the in-game damage effects.

The makers of this game wanted to make it possible for it to work on various systems without the need for installing DirectX 10. It uses a customized 3D video game engine that allows players to have an overhead view of their character, in a similar, but an improved way to the first two parts of the franchise.

When it comes to the character categories from the basic game and its expansion pack “Reaper of Souls”, there are six characters in total. However, in 2017, a seventh one was added. People loved that they can choose their gender in the new part, which they could not do in the two previous releases. Let’s take a look at the classes:

1. The Witch Doctor

He can summon monsters, throw poisons and explosives, cast curses, and harvest souls. This class needs mana to cast spells, which slowly regenerates over time.

The Development Process

The development process on this game began 18 years ago, back when Blizzard North was still working, however, the development of the game was revealed seven years later in 2008 at an event in Paris. The original art concept was completely different from what was shown at the Parisian event, and it underwent three reviews until the people behind the game felt it was good enough.

They also announced that Diablo III will be released for Mac and Windows computers, as well as that you will be required to constantly be connected to the Internet, even if you wanted to play the single-player mode. The external beta testing started in mid-2012 and finished at the beginning of May, the same year. Following the testing period, the game was officially released on May 15th.
