Yara Shahidi Wins Her First BET Award, Gives A Shoutout To Tamir Rice On Stage

Yara Shahidi Wins Her First BET Award, Gives A Shoutout To Tamir Rice On Stage featureYara Shahidi returned to the BET Awards Sunday night. After missing out on the “YoungStars Award” last year, the actress and Harvard student took home the trophy. Showing off fresh new curls and a distressed denim dress, Yara jogged up to the stage in a moment that fans have since set to music. Her acceptance speech was no joke, though.

“Today is Tamir Rice’s birthday,” she reminded the crowd, referring to the Cleveland teen who would’ve turned 15 on Sunday if he hadn’t been gunned down by police at age 12.. “So, amidst the celebration, I’d love to honor his life.”

“Thank you for supporting blackness and our contribution to society,” she also said, “because it is so appreciated and so necessary for my generation to see.”

Beyoncé Snatches Five BET Awards While Away On Maternity Leave

Beyonce Wins Five BET Awards While Off On Maternity Leave featureBeyoncé is taking an understandable leave of absence from the spotlight after giving birth to premature twins. While she seemed eager to perform until the last minute while pregnant, she skipped Sunday night’s 2017 BET Awards. It was an eventful evening for her to miss as she racked up five wins at the show.

Beyoncé took home hardware for “Best Female R&B/Pop Artist” and “Album of the Year” for “Lemonade.” The music video for her song “Sorry” earned wins in “Video Director of the Year” and “Viewer’s Choice Video” as well as splitting “Video of the Year” honors with Bruno Mars’ visual for “24K Magic.” Beyonce sent her protege duo Chloe x Halle to accept an award on her behalf.

But one Knowles did get to take the stage as Beyoncé’s sister Solange won at the awards show. She was honored with the “Centric Award” after losing out to her sister in three categories. And she just so happened to forget Bey’s name during her acceptance speech.

Watch Chloe x Halle stick to Beyoncé’s script below.
