After a drawn-out legal battle that saw several twists and turns, Kesha has finally returned to music. While she didn’t get her way in her case against alleged sexual assailant Dr. Luke, it looks like Kesha is ready to try the case in the court of public opinion.
“Praying” is the first track from of her new album, “Rainbow.” The piano ballad is a confessional full of her hopes for Dr. Luke now. Kesha sings to someone who “put me through hell,” saying she hopes whoever it is is praying and that his “soul is changing.” Kesha wrote about the new track and her journey at length in a new Lenny Letter.
“I have channeled my feelings of severe hopelessness and depression, I’ve overcome obstacles, and I have found strength in myself even when it felt out of reach,” she writes. “This song is about coming to feel empathy for someone else even if they hurt you or scare you.”
An official video dropped simultaneously with the track. It’s full of Kesha in evocative situations like fighting off pig men in a bed, being stranded at sea and praying at a few colorful altars. At the end, she goes full-on Christ-like as she heads towards a rainbow in the distance.
