Ryan Adams Compares Taylor Swift To Shakespeare In The Guardian

Ryan Adams 1989 InterviewRyan Adams, whose current album covers Taylor Swift’s entire “1989” record, spoke with The Guardian and compared the “Wildest Dreams” singer to William Shakespeare. Ryan revealed that beginning his work on the tracks for his “1989” project was like “being in Ghostbusters or something, and then all of a sudden I have to go do Shakespeare.”

Some people may think Ryan comparing Taylor to perhaps the greatest writer of all time is a bit of a stretch, but when it comes to Taylor’s talents, Ryan is fully drinking the Kool-Aid. “Well, look, those songs are popular for a reason,” he defends. “She’s a popular artist for a reason.”

“The first time I heard [Taylor’s 2008 song, “White Horse”] I got chills head to toe,” Ryan continues. “I remember feeling shocked by her voice, shocked at how clean that song was. I like stuff that sort of penetrates through my regular consciousness and hits me where I’m not looking. That’s usually stuff that’s a little darker. You know, that song is really about disillusionment on such a grand scale. I just thought about how this is hitting me like a tidal wave, it’s so romantic and so beautiful, and yet so sad and so disillusioned — it’s all the stuff I love about the Smiths.”

What do you think about Ryan’s comparison of Taylor with Shakespeare? Or even his comparison Taylor and the Smiths?

Taylor Swift Dreams About A Lot Of Her Lyrics

Ryan Lewis Interviews Taylor SwiftSinger and “1989”- reinterpreter Ryan Adams sat down with Taylor Swift as part of her cover shoot for the November issue of GQ Magazine, and the two artists spoke about the creative process that Taylor uses for her albums.

The first question Ryan asks Taylor is if she has ever dreamt about a song before writing it. “Yes,” she says instantly, “The song ‘All You Had to Do Was Stay’ there’s this really high-pitched ‘stay!’ I had a dream that my ex showed up at my door, knocked on the door, and I opened it up and I was about ready to launch into like the perfect thing to say, and instead all that would come out of my mouth was that high-pitched chorus of people saying ‘stay.'”

Ryan comments that he didn’t even attempt to imitate that on his version of “1989,” since he thought it was a “super weird” part of the song.

Taylor also reveals that she keeps an endless “notepad” of lyrics in her phone. “When I was writing ‘Blank Space’ I wrote the chorus and I was like ‘Alright I need to search through all my lyrics that I’ve thought of in the last year’…and so I would go through and cherry pick.” She also adds that she watched John Hughes movies for inspiration while writing “1989.”
