Update Samsung Galaxy Y S5360 to Android 4.4 Kitkat

Galaxy Y S360 was the first ever budget Android phone from Samsung launched couple of years ago. As it was an entry level phone, Galaxy Y didn’t received any firmware update officially after Android 2.3 Gingerbread. There could be several reasons for not releasing the updates for Samsung which may either include the low specification of this phone or because of its Price because if such low budget phone will run on latest Android, what will happen to their other Flagship phones.

Anyways. There are other ways as well to get newer Android versions on your Galaxy Y S5360. We have posted several Guides and tutorials for updating different versions of Android on your phone such as ICS, Jellybean 4.1, Jellybean 4.2, etc. You can get the complete lost of Custom ROMs for Galaxy Y S5360 here. Now, as we know Android 4.4 Kitkat is the latest Android version from Google, we can surely say Samsung is never going to offer it on Galaxy Y. Hence, today i am going to post a guide showing how you can get Android 4.4 Kitkat using a Custom ROM named Cyanocream 4. Using this ROM, you not only get Kitkat User Interface but also many features of this new OS.

So now lets go ahead and get Android 4.4 Kitkat on your S5360 but before that let’s have a look at some important requirements to carry out this tutorial.

Pre-Requirements:

  • As usual, you should always backup all your important data before installing any Custom ROMs or Rooting the device because, possibly, you may loose all data during these processes.
  • Charge the phone upto 60% or more, as it should not get drained out during the installation.
  • Make sure your phone is rooted and running CWM Recovery. If you have not rooted the phone yet, follow this most easiest way of doing the same: How to Root Samsung Galaxy Y S5360
  • Now download Cyanocream v4 and copy it to your phone’s SD Card. Make sure you copy this in the Root Folder of your SD Card so that it can be browsed easily during the installation.

So far we have seen many tutorials for installing such Custom ROMs, those were so easy. But in this case, the installation is quite tricky but not so difficult. I’m calling it tricky because you need to reboot the phone upto three times during this process after installing stock kernal, then the ROM, then again another kernal and so on. This takes upto 20 minutes to complete the installation, but (telling again) it is not so difficult. You just need to follow the process as provided below:

Installation process:

First Step:

  • Start by turning off your Galaxy Y S5360 and reboot it in CWM recovery by Pressing Volume up +Home + Power key altogether for few seconds.
  • in CWM, tap on Mount and Storage, now one by one mount data , then mount cache and then mount system.
  • Now come back to the main Recovery screen and tap on Install Zip from SD Card
  • Now browse and select the downloaded Cyanocream V4.zip from the SD Card
  • Now follow the onscreen instructions carefully and first install “Stock kernel”
  • Dont do anything, just reboot the phone.

Second Step:

  • Once booted completely, turn it off again and boot into CWM recovery
  • You should have the stock this time on rebooting into recovery again
  • Flash the CWM recovery as provided in the Rooting Guide
  • Once in CWM Recovery, mount data, cache and system
  • Now select Install Zip from SD Card and select Cyanocream V4.zip. This time you need to install WhiteXp kernel.
  • Again reboot the phone.

Third Step:

  • Now restart the phone again into Recovery by pressing and holding Volume up +Home + Power keys together
  • Now mount data, mount cache, mount system as we did above.
  • Once done, come back and tap on ‘Advance’ option at bottom and Wipe dalvik cache followed by wiping Battery stats
  • Now you again need to mount data, cache, and system from ‘Mount and Storage’ option.
  • Now from the same main recovery screen scroll down and select Wipe Data and Cache
  • Now again mount data, cache, and system from ‘Mount and Storage’ option.
  • Once done, stay on the same screen and Format System, Format Data and Format Cache.
  • Now again mount data, cache, and system from ‘Mount and Storage’ option.
  • Once done formatting, go back to the main recovery screen and select Install Zip from SD Card.
  • Browse to your SD Card and select Cyanocream V4.zip.
  • Follow on screen instructions and this time you need to install CyanoCream rom.
  • This will take couple of minutes to install. Wait and let it complete.
  • Once the ROM installation is complete, reboot the system and you are done.

As this will be the first boot with new rom, it may take bit longer time to reboot. So dont panic and be calm. Once booted, do your settings and configuration. Dont forget to check “About Device” option in settings panel. You will see the Android version 4.4.

As the process seems bit tricky, if in case you are not able to understand it properly, here is the video tutorial of the same you can go through:
